Hip injury...?

Post by Chrisbrum »

Hi there, was wondering if anyone could help me with this, not totally sure what to do about it.

I've just started training again recently after a long period (about 18 months) of nothing (got carried away with uni and student lifestyle!) I did 5 days training with no problems, and then had 3 days off (was meant to be just one or two days but got stuck with girlfriend duty lol). Anyway, I went out for a run last night and after about a mile I started to feel a slight niggle in my right hip. It was nothing too major, and I was able to complete the run (3 miles) and do some springs around a football pitch aswell, but I'm concerned that it may develop into something more. Would it be wise to keep training on it or should I rest it for a few days. I'm concerned that I've only just started to get back into the habit of training and my fitness at the moment is pretty low, and I want to push to get up to a basic level of fitness so that I can start training more specifically for my POC.

So, basically, should I rest or should I keep going - it doesn't seem to major at the moment but I don't want to aggravate it, but at the same time I don't want to get out of the habit of training again!

Cheers

Chris

Im assuming, from what you've said, you have been doing nothing, and gone straight into running 3 miles? 5 days in a row?

No, I've been mixing it up a fair amount. Last week was like this:

Day 1 - 1.5 mile jog, 1hr swimming
Day 2 - Bleep Test (Score was embarrassing, got a long way to go yet!)
Day 3 - Squash
Day 4 - 3mile jog
Day 5 - Boxing Training - Circuits (included 1.5 mile jog to gym and 1.5 miles back)

3 days off

Yesterday - 3 miles + 5 sprints round football pitch

On the jogs I've been taking it pretty easy, not really pushing it just trying to build up slowly.

Does this sound like too much? Before I stopped training last year I'd been very active and sporty throughout my life, playing rugby and various other sports, as well as 5 years in the cadets and a year in the TA, so I've never been in a position where I've had to start from scratch before, and not sure whether I could be overdoing it.

It's difficult not to get carried away after reading a lot of the stuff on here, a lot of the training people are doing sounds brilliant but maybe it's too much for me at this early stage

Take things slow at first and remember that rest days are just as important as training days (infact they are more important) 5 days on and 3 days off is counter-productive.

Personally I do:
Monday and Tuesday on (Max effort)
Wednesday off (Active rest- swim/walk etc)
Thursday, Friday & Saturday on (Max effort)
Sunday off (Complete rest)

Break up your rest days and never take more than 1 day off unless injured.

As far as the hip goes there is no way we can advise on that but it may be a case of you doing too much too soon, if it doesnt go away seek proper advice from your GP.

In which case put warm wheatgerm bags or similar over the site, general advice is 5 mins twice a day until injury has recovered. Also protein supplements help muscular recovery.

I dont want to throw in the bad side of things (hopefully its not), but my hip injury started off as a slight injury and I thought nothing of it and carried on. 2 years later, 2 PRMC's and 1 MD from the Marines because of it, I am still suffering with it.

I dont wanna scare you mate, but I would rest it. You dont wanna do any bad damage to it :)

The site can only go as far as general support and advice regarding injuries and always the line is - listen to your body! If it does not feel right then seek expert advice, such as Doctor, Physio, Chripractor etc.

Don't take a chance and make a niggling injury a serious one

Hi guys, thanks for all your advice. As it happens I haven't had a problem since Friday so I think it's passed over. I've read about so many people on this forum who've been MD'd or had their training substantially set back by injury that I may have been overreacting a little. However, I will still be wary in the future as I don't want to pick up niggles and have them turn into major injuries, but next time I'm not going to panic so quickly and post it straight on this site!

Anyway, cheers again guys. I've only been using this forum for just over a week but so far the information I've picked up has been invaluable. I'm in the very early stages of training for POC so I can imagine I'll be continuing to use these resources for a long time to come!

Regards

Chris
