when doing sas selection you need excellent map and compass skills
for long tabs and finding rv points.
do they teach you these skills before the test or do you need to learn them yourself?
and also what kind of compass do sas use?

If i am correct in saying, all those skills will be taught to you during your service in normal milirary units. You cannot join the SAS untill atleast 3 years of service. This is so that the applicants have basic military knowledge and disapline and can easily adapt to the special forces.

As for the compass type i have no idea mate, sorry.

You will be given a map reading and navigation refresher during early part of Selection.
Used to use the standard lensatic compass, but many people bought their own Silva orienteering compass, lighter, cheaper and don't cost so much if you lose it.Get the one on a rectangular base so you can use it for geting bearings off maps easily
