Hi,
I've been browsing these forums for quite a long time but haven't really posted anything. I must say I've found these forums alot of help in advising me on ways to train to become a royal and I thank everyone who has posted valuble advice on these forums.
But there is one thing that has recently been brought to my attention which may affect my chances of joining the armed forces. I had my medical on the 3rd of October, and the service Dr. found that I have a heart murmur, it was news to me as well as this has never been brought up before. I passed every other aspect on the medical apart from this and it did take the Dr. a while to find that I actually had one. He told me that it may not be anything to worry about but that I need to see my GP about it just to be sure, so I have an appointment for Monday. But I was just wondering whether anybody else has had this problem and whether they could give me any information about whether this could really put me out of the running for being a Royal.
Thanks in advance.
McGill.

I have a heart murmur which was only picked up when I went to RSC last year.
I was deffered because of it and the army sent me to see a cardiac specialist to get an ECG and some other tests to make sure it wasn't serious. It turned out that it wasn't serious and I was allowed to carry on with my application.
There were loads of other lads there too and most of them just got the same verdict as me. Basically they just need to make sure it's nothing serious so that you don't end up collapsing durning PT etc....
I'm suprised that they told you to just go back to your GP I would have thought they'd have had a similar system.
I've never had any problems over it and would have never know if it hadn't been picked up, actually it's a very common condition it's just that most people never even know they have it.
So if it's never caused you problems before it more than likely won't be anything major and once you have been checked out and given the all clear it won't affect your application.

yeh i have to echo what the others have said here, my best mate went or army selection a few months ago and had to come home early becuase of a 'heart murmur' the doc found. but when he went to the specialist about it, they told him he had a very healthy heart and it was probably becuase he had been drinking so much lucozade (the fizzy sort) and was so stressed about it.
youll be fine mate

I knew I had a heart mummur when I was a baby, but grew out of it. However on my medical he could detect a faint 'echo mummur' which is common in a few people, soo I had to get a letter of my GP. As the other lads said, you have to get it checked out with an ECG and ultra sound, which I did anyway two years ago. Basically the older letter was ok, but it was a shock and a panic to learn that I had failed my medical. However it only took one letter and here I am now in training.
thank $%&* for this post.
I had just some medical today as a selection for an OTC thing at university.
The 1.5miler went fine, got 8:08, and everything was going good untill the medical when he said i had a murmur.
I was totally gutted because i thought that could be the end of any military career dream.
But i thought i would check on here to see if anyone had posted about it. Thank god that is'nt the end of the road!!!! The quack made is sound so serious.
I coulnt give a toss if i have a heart murmer, it hasnt affected my fitness, but this OTC thing i really want to do for the next few years.
cheers for putting this into perspective!
