RMR wings.

Post by halford »

not sure which forum to put this in. As a fully qualified member of an RMR detachment, is it possible to go for parachute training, as far as i am aware, commando trained personnel dont have to pass p-company, but can a reservist still attempt the basic parachuting course? how often are these courses ran? is there any physical test involved? is there a long waiting list? any help greatly apppreciated.

If you're after your wings in the RMR then best not get your hopes up. Getting your wings requires your unit to have parachute ground training equipment and a trained man to teach the required ground synthetics both pre jumps course and pre exercise jump.

There is currently no requirements for any marines to be parachute trained unless their specialisation requires it. This means you could get it having done the Recce leaders course but so far the parachute trained requirement has not been recognised for RMR lads taking this course.

Recce leaders qualification is also likely to be restricted to one RMR unit as well which means you would have to be with the right RMR unit.

Of course you would still have to get past the fact lads higher up the chain of command will probably get any billets on a para course long before any fresh faced grunt. 8)

ok, thanks for the info. iv heard that commando trained personnel dont have to pass the all arms P company to qualify for the parachute course, is this true? Also, if you were to transfer to a regular unit which was not RM, say an army infantry unit, would you commando qualification still be valid, and as a result would you still be able to bypass P company? (odd questions i know, but any help would be nice.)

It is possible to get your wings without doing the all arms parachute course once you have passed out in the RMR,to get your wings you will have to do the jumps only...as mentioned earlier getting on the courses isn't the easiest...I have heard RMR Tyne are one of the best for getting on courses, notably the jumps course...how you finding life in the RMR?no doubt you having fun up and down the rope out the back every drill nite?!!....to the top....CLIMB!!

Im not actually in the RMR. My selection weekend is early September for RMR Mersey. Im 18, just left school, and (hopefully) going to pass out into the RMR whilst in uni, stay for a few years after uni, have a civvy job for a bit, then either go for regular service in RM or an Army unit. it was just a query i had. (yes i kno, putting the cart before the horse, lets get in the RMR before i worry about all that parachuting malarky.)

We were told when we first joined by one of the APJIs in the unit that it was very unlikely that any of us was ever going to do parachute training unless we go SB or perhaps do the new RO(Recce Operators) course.

So i would concentrate on getting your Lid and then worry about getting some wings. I also hear on the grape vine that a lot of guys in 4 Para and other para units are now sometimes taking upto a year after passing out of training before getting their wings as there is a big back log. This may be BS however.

Parachuting is as you know an Adqual within the Corps.
Once you have passed your CCse there should be no
problem to obtain your para brevet/wings. Reservists
complete 7 jumps only w/o the night jump. It is all a
question of keeness. Go for it.

A fully trained RMR bod does not have to pass P Coy to complete the basic jumps course, however as Scottish Kiwi said even 4 Para lads are waiting 12 months or more to do the course.

I also know that both regular and reserve Paras have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan without their wings. This is mainly due to a shortage of aircraft as they small amount we have are required for Ops and cant be justified for parachute training. With this in mind, if the Airborne cant get a basic jumps course, there aint much chance for Royal!!

However, Ive heard that in the past if there were spare slots on a jumps course, it gets offered out. A good example is around 8 or so years ago, 23 SAS had spaces on a jumps course and phoned Edin Det of RMR Scotland, to ask if any lads wanted to go on the course.

As Kiwi said though - Id be more concerned with the first hurdle, as in passing the course.
