Caught a cold, POC next week

Post by Goy »

My POC starts next week and I have had a cold for the past week, which is a bit of a bummer.

Anyway when I run now, since I've had the cold, I can only manage 4 miles before I get really dehydrated, my mouth drys up and I get that horrible bright white spit/saliva and I feel drained. My press ups and sit ups are still fine and I am still up to pace for the early stages of the exercise.

I'm still going as theres no point cancelling it now, it'll be a learning experience if nothing else. What I'm getting round to is that all the paperwork I've read says you carry round a water bottle all the time to keep fully hydrated, but do you carry it on your RMFA and endurance course to drink whilst your going round? Because I am getting abit worried now as it doesn't seem to be going.

I've got my pre-POC brief tomorrow so I'll ask them aswell, just wondered if anyone here could help

Cheers, I know I shouldn't be doing any phys but I feel really guilty about not doing anything 2 weeks before my POC.
I haven't been doing as much as I planned on, I've just been out for 3 x 6 mile runs (4 miles of which has been run) in the past 2 weeks to see how I feel and it isn't looking good. I was really confident before and now I feel really dibilitated. O'well I'll rest from now on, I can only try

You are unlikely to lose much fitness and will feel much better for it. It will stand you the best chance of passing your POC.

rest really is the best option, you hear horror stories of people who keep exercising and eventually turn a trivial cold into something more long term and serious.
There is some truth in that, but with a mild cold you can still do some exercise. If you've got a chest infection llike I have just had no choice - the body just won't let you do nowt!

Take loads of vit C, do a "nose douche" if you can bear it (filll a bowl with warm water and salt and sniff it up LOL) and get a bowl of warm water, and a towel wrap it around the bowl and beathe in the vapour, that should all help.

Good luck

Use boiling water, you want lots of steam. Also use Olbas Oil, its the dogs mate, and you'll really notice the help in breathing.

Speaking from experience...rest up. Over the next two weeks just do streches on every single muscle, this will keep them active so you wont loose strength, and over two weeks you shouldnt loose any fitness. I tried to train through a cold, 6 months later its finally starting to clear up...trust me rest

I had a virus about a month before my POC and carried on traing through it (not a good idea), it led to post viral fatige and eventually i was in bed completely knackered for about a week. I was only at 80% health when i did POC and i felt it! - i passed but only just and you need to pass well to be in with a shot. I also had a damaged shoulder which was limiting.

My Point is don't do POC without being healthy - it can be easily postponed and even the fittest need to be at 100% to do well.
POC June 5th - PASSED
AIB July 3rd - PASSED

RT, (where did that come from?)

still coming?

hiya,

Are you still coming tomorrow then? The rest will really help and you should be off phys for 4days pre-POC anyhow.

I look forward to meeting you...

Alex.

Hey,

Yeah I'm still going, I'm better now than earlier in the week but I'm still not 100%, I'll just go balls out and hope for the best. I have thought about postponing it like TDB said but I'm sure I'll be fine (famous last words!!!).

Everythings sorted and I'm packing tonight, been mugging up on current affairs today, terrorism mainly (there SHOULD be a question on it (more famous last words)). As long as I finish the course I'll be happy.

See you sunday evening, I'm getting there around 1800

Cheers, Goy
