Afternoon everyone,

Next week I'll be going to Salford Uni to study 'Contemporary Military and International History' and as this is my first time staying in Manchester I lack training partners. So I was just wondering as to whether anyone on the boards lives near Salford Uni/Castle Irwell or perhaps might be going to the University themselves would like to train and show me the ropes around Manchester.

Apologies for making this sound like a dating add.

If your going officer that degree would look great on AIB/Selection process.

Shouldn't be a problem mate, I'm only in the very early stages of training at the moment anyway so just give me a heads up with a PM and I'll be there. :D

^^ Course details for those who may be interested. Sounds almost too good to be true for those who are looking for a degree that will help then along a military path.

What kinda training are you after? I'm used to live near manc, i suppose i still am, but not close enough to train.

There are quite a few gyms around salford, some are kinda meat head/sweat pits though.

If however, you're looking to supplement your training with something a bit different, there are a load of good MMA gyms around there. Salford Ground and Pound is one, and a few more in the centre of manc.

I would advise against going street running in Salford however

PRM,

You lucky git, that course sounds absolutely awesome. Would have loved to do it myself, i got a few modules from my joint history degree that will be good (nazi regime, and American foreign policy from 45 (Vietnam a majot part), but that course sounds too good).

Hope you enjoy it.

am on this course mate! Going into my last year now at salford uni, plan to start training after ive finished uni cos i got my dissertation this year so at the moment am only doing on/off training and mostly weights etc not specifically for RM tests so cant really help you there.i can however tell you more about the course...

to many this does sound like a dream course and in alot of ways it is dont get me wrong, but there are ups and downs and i suppose it depends on the individual.obviously the highlights are learning about the pure military aspects of history, wars etc,but dont forget its not all blood guts and guns, because the course also involves international history which although is specific to military affairs,is more of the international relations and politics side of things.another example is one module you take in your first year which is purely about historiography and researching in histroy-very boring.you'll find a certain pattern emerges, with each term consisting of a good module(military),an ok one(international) and a boring one(reseasrch).

then it depends on what lectureres and seminar leaders you get as some are very interesting but other make you want to slit your wrists.

and then as to the people on the course, theres little to no females(and if there is they're absolute howlers),and theres a few older people(30-50 year olds-who always think they know best with there facts but fall short in the essays because of a lack of writing skills and historical argument, and depending on your stance your going to have to put up with 30 percent of the people being TA.this in principle doesnt bother me but its the type of people they are that angers me,which i wont get into too much but needlesstosay they are extremely annoying.

all that said, this is a really interesting course on the whole and as far a free time for training or whatever you cant ask for more, yhou dont have to go to lectures and need only to go to half of seminars(although theres that few anyway it doesnt matter much),were talking a few hours a week literally, and i think theres only two other places in where you can study this sort of stuff and thats wales and kings college london.salford has sum great lectures aswel ie nick gardner, and if you can you must talk to dr eric groves the man is a livng legend-youve probably seen him in war documentaries etc and on theat battlegroung thing they did on channel two maybe, hes an expert on naval warfare(well expert on everything really the mans a walking military encyclopedia) and he advises alot of top naval personnel etc.

id be happy to answer any specific questions you have

Well, Daka, Ideally I was looking to do cardio primarily as the main thing I've learnt of these boards is that if you want to pass PRMC or training for that matter run, run and run some more. The only problem being is that this being my first time staying in Manchester/Salford, I know very little about the surrounding areas and where it is actually safe to go running. Sit ups and push ups or any sort of upper body work I can do at the gym.

Dwarfy, the course itself only required 180 UCAS points, I think that's around a C and a D A level wise, so it's not that hard to get on to either. Personally I only got 100 UCAS points and they still let me on. :o

Degrees of Passion, thanks for the info, looks like there will be a good variation of people on the course, which can be a good thing. I'm very used to the downside of history after having to learn about the 'Special relationship' for a bloody year. 'Teach us about the British Empire' I shouted, 'Nooo that would be too politically incorrect' they replied.
You'll have to pop down and say hello some time, off down there tommorow for the welcome week.

By the way is there any chance that you may be able to lend me your first and second year notes? That would be a great help.

the bit of salford the unis is is not actually that bad(despite what alot of people think-but then again i live in a shithole myself so maybe im used to it :D ) and theres a few bits of green to run and like someone said its best not to run round the streets all the time-but as you'll probably be told dont go through peel park(the park inside the uni grounds) on your own at night cos apparantly its well dodgy, and i lived next to salford precinct for two years and probably wouldnt jog around there on my own at night.

ive definately not got my first year notes i just chucked them cos your first year doesnt count toward your degree and i just sort of sauntered along it and didnt take notes most of the time,i got my second year ones somewhere-to be honest you dont need them if you know a bit of history from school or college you'll be ok (i know i had a headstart on alot of people just from the background knowledge i had and ive never done much studying.i suppose if your desperate you can just ask someone from year2 who should have them handy but i really wouldnt worry-oh ye an dont spend all your money on that stupid list of books they tell you to buy cos theres only maybe one or two core reading you need and you can find them out after you start.

Does doing a degree give you a higher chance of being selected for training or/even giving you a higher chance of passing training as an officer for the marines?

If that made any sense :-? because it didn't too me lol
