SF Swim Test

Post by gseph »

Just an enquiry on to what the SF swim test entails?

I can swim, but i'm gonna need to get in the pool over the next few months before the September intake for 23rd. I just wanna know what the swim test entails and what swimming they do throughout the course.

What stroke do you have to do and, do you do swimming with kit or just trunks etc

Please advise as September is getting closer by the minute!

Cheers

I recall doing a river crossing during continuation trg, the swim after rafting bergans was about 300mts, trouble is the water in question was in a resivour in the north of england and it was DECEMBER so the water was a bit hard never mind says Mac safty boat will break it up a bit for you, then just to make sure you dont get hyperthermic run back to start point around said res about 4 klicks ...
and its 23 not 23rd
The Brecon Becons still stand Pen-y Fan is still a pain it makes no differance jnr, snr, selection, it stays with you ............

I can swim but at the moment, 500m is a fair distance for me, do you think I could just do the easy back stroke all the way, lol?

Another quick question, how hard is the map reading test? do you have to do some navigation out in the field or is it all classromm stuff?

Last but not least, on the second day there is a DS led march of 12km...but it dosen't give a time! Any chance of someone knowing what speed this is at???

Thanks again

Don't worry about:
1) The swim test. It ain't hard. Take it steady.
2) The Map reading test. It's all explained. Unless you are a knobber- you'll pass.

As to - How Fast? If I may humbly suggest - this is the wrong attitude. Just get as fit as you can and give a genuine 100%. If you are good enough you will pass. If you aren't you are still 1000% better than those who talk about it and don't even apply.

Thanks for the advice. I did phone up since my last post, and found it's not what a lot of people make it out to be...I think i'm just gonna go out there and do my damn best!

Swimming Test.
I shouldn't worry too much about it. When I did mine I only just passed it. If it had been another length, I would have failed.
I was probably the worst swimmer to have passed the SBS selection.
In retrospect, I was also one of the best divers in the SBS.
The reason, I think, is that I was negatively bouyant. Which meant that on the surface, I found swimming difficult. Underwater it was easy! I didn't need many weights!
You overcome any difficulties, in any field by finding a way to turn them into a positive.
Hope this helps.

APTC swim tests, UKLF School of PT 1984:

Test 1:

Location: School pool.

Dress: Boots, Lightweights, cbt shirt/jacket, Mae West.

Method: Enter water from top board (5m as I recall), remove Mae West and swim under water to mid-way point in pool (I beleive it was a 25 m pool), surface swim to end (any stroke) turn about (without touching the side) and return to start point, tread water for ten minutes, exit the pool unaided.

Test 2:

Location: Lake.

Dress: As above.

Method: Enter water (mid-Feb - not pleasant), swim out 100m, adopt the HELP (Heat Escape Lessening Posture) position, stay there for an inordinate length of time, on whistle blast attempt to swim back to shore with numb limbs! Change in back of Bedford under the amused gaze of a fairly tidy fem RMP.

Can't decide whether it would be worse to keep swimming, warm up but getting brainfreeze, or to keep head out of water, and have the rest of you turn to ice!

I'd go for option C: freeze, sink, get pulled out, kiss of life from fem RMP
