Dwarfy does say what I meant, but I do have to admit the "playing soldiers" was a bit out of line and I retract the comment, it was pretty much unnecessary.beardo wrote:I dont understand that comment at all? I joined the corps pretty much the same time Harry started training. I didnt join to ''go play soldiers'', and I'm pretty sure he, or anyone he trained with, did eitherthemattmeister wrote: I do so on the assumption that it would make his unit more susceptible to attack by insurgents and I don't think that anyone needs to be put in anymore danger then they would be already just because Harry wants to go and play soldiers.

Mattmiester,
I,m with you on this one, when you first look at it on a simple basis its easy to say yes, he should go, but when you look at the complexities of certain area,s, iraq specifically and to an extent Afghanistan, you realsie there is far more to it than him just going over there and being a soldier.
Different situations as you say, like all out war, would not pose the same questions as this counter insurgency issue in iraq. Andrew being in a pilot in the Falkland's for example is a totaly different kettle of fish, in that situation the risk to himself or others took no greater significance due is status, the risk was plain and evident to him regardless.

Well done to Harry for passing out
He took the shilling and i would think he going to get very bored just sitting behind a desk!
As for being in danger (or attracting danger to those around him) if the nasties are after him it could also happen in this county... it was not so long ago soldiers were being bombed and maimed in this country

Should be interesting to see what the public think.

Agreed Harrys' mug might attract a bit of more attention but everyone in here knows that across there at the moment everything in a uniform is getting shot at so will it really make much difference? I think whoever goes in the sh*t instead of Harry will atrract just as much grief.

I don't think he should be sent to either Iraq or Afganistan because I think he would become more of a hinderence than help over there.
This isn't anything personal against Harry as I understand it must be horrible to go through all that effort and then not be able to do the job you trained to do but the fact is that the "war on terror" is as much a properganda war as anything else and we would have nothing to gain from allowing him to serve over there and everything to loose.
What I mean by this is that the "war on terror" and in particular the war in Iraq will be won or lost in the media and the insurgents know this.
They know they can never hope to defeat the coalition militarily but they're smart enough to realise that they don't have to do that and that there best option for victory is to convince the world that Iraq is in chaos and is a quagmire for the coalition which will cost thousands of lives for a hopeless cause that can never be won.
This is why they target civilians and mosques because they know that these pictures will be broadcast wall to wall on 24hr news networks and create a disproportionate belief that the whole country is ablaze.
So when they see the propaganda opportunity that Prince Harry would provide why would they pass up the chance try and humiliate the British army and indeed the government?
The Media would provide that area he was opperating in, plus it wouldn't be that hard to find out themselve as all regiments wear their cap badges out there anyway, and then they could just focus all of their attacks in that area.
They wouldn't even need to target him specifically just simply attack as many patrols as possible that way even if they didn't so much as injure him the army would be forced to pull him out as once the public perception was he was the reason for the increased attacks that's what they'd be calling for.
If soldiers were killed in these attacks people would ask why did they have to die so Harry could "play at being a soldier" and the families with sons over there would be marching asking "if it's not safe for Harry why is it safe for my son/daughter to be there" etc... and if he was to die "the whole nation now feals the loss of a son" would probably be an idea of the headlines.
If they do send him I think it's only playing into the Insurgents hands.

Now I dont want to upset any ardent royalists but the IDEA of a tetherd goat is not a new one, every soldier in that particular shit hole is in extreme danger anyway let the lad get on with it ......
The Brecon Becons still stand Pen-y Fan is still a pain it makes no differance jnr, snr, selection, it stays with you ............
