ADVICE PLEASE

Post by halford »

im new to the site and am probably just being lazy by starting a new thread, but i would like some quite specific advice.

i was planning on joining the OTC at liverpool uni in september, and then the regular army after uni, but iv been turned off the OTC for reasons which most of you are probably aware of.

i spoke to a relative who was in RMR merseyside and i am now strongly considering this to be a fantastic opportunity whilst at uni, and the more i look the more i would rather go Marines after uni than army. however......

i have been informed that you do not get paid until you have passed selection. this means (assuming i dont fail) there is a year (i think its a year?) where i would not be earning money from the RMR, this means i would have to get another job, bar work etc.

i have seen several "uni and RMR" threads, but does anyone know of people who have balanced RMR and uni (with priority leaning on RMR) and also held a part time job for a year? or does anyone think it even possible?

any advice will be warmly recieved. sorry for the long post! thanks for your help.

Halford,

I think you may be missing what selection(as such) is!

Once you have passed the PRC (very initial selection weekend), which allows you to start phase1A training, you will then get paid for everything you do with the RMR. You will get paid for drill nights and weekend training exercises throughout your RMR basic training.

You will not be going a year without earning from the RMR (unless you dont go to any training nights/weekends), you WILL get paid during your Basic training.

Hope this clears things up.

i have attended holding troop for a while now and i have a 22 hour/week part time job and im doing BA sociology.

ive had no real problems so far but dont expect to get a first! i guess it will be harder when you go away for a weekend once a month but if you plan your time theres no reason why you cant combine all 3.

also bear in mind you will need to be training in your own time 4 times a week at least and i do find this hard to fit in but i make sure i do because i want the green lid eventually.

the girlfriend puts up with it but i know we probably wont last because of all 3 things im doing, its hard to fit her in amongst everything else but she understands.

EDIT
During training you wont earn large amounts of cash anyway so it might be worth considering another part time job anyway, especially if you have extra expenses like car costs

Borisimo,

How do you manage your time at university with regards to 2 week training exercises ect. Does university allow you to take off the 2 weeks?? How do you keep on top of your work with the two week exercises, I think I could manage the weekend exercises but the 2 week ones I should think are quite a bit of hassle. Obviously though, it would depend on your course.

All the best,

i havent been inducted yet so havent been away on weekends just in holding troop.

i would have to catch up with uni work they are quite understanding about it but of course if exams were to fall at the time of a 2 week exercise then id have a very tough choice to make.

my part time job is the trickier bit as im fairly senior and so ill need to give them advance warning but they have said they will let me have the time off as and when needed.

bear in mind that some students dont go in for 2 weeks at a time just because they cant be bothered

cheers flo, spot on as usual  as i said the hard work hasnt even begun yet but ill try my best, hasnt helped that ive been really depressed lately because ive been injured and cant play football or do training.

Watch yourself mate, i was injured in a knee crushing accident nearly 4 years ago and flo took the brunt. It turned out that there is a condition that athletes get if they cant train and the body endorphins build up and your mood changes because your body is not letting the endorpins release naturally. Unfortunatly for me my head swung in all directions but luckily fi is a fast runner and went to the powers that be and helped get me sorted out. If you feel you are going down get help. I didnt and it nearly cost me a marriage.

I'm getting pretty depressed to, I was training hard for 6 months for my POC then got glandular fever, then I had to cancil my POC which pi$$ed me off a tread!

Anyway I've canciled my application for officer and looking towards the RMR now, which I dont think I'm going to be fit for the selection in Sept. I've heard glandular fever can last from 5 months to five years (I've had it for 3 months already)! Every time I exercise I get really ill, cant drink alchol either as that makes me ill to! Cant even kiss my bloody girl friend!!!!! So here I am moping around my house eating the last of my easter eggs and not being able to do anything about anything apart from 'wait', professional advice that was. :( :( :(

Glandular fever is unpredctable. Luckily i only had it for about 6-8 weeks. Rest and keep loading up on vitamins. That's really the only way to beat it quickly.

thanks for the advice on pay etc. i was going off what i had been told by someone i know who did 4 four years in RMR.

i rang HMS Eaglet (RMR Merseyside) but just got the machine, and the guy in James street careers office didnt have a clue about RMR, jst gave me 'brochures'. Iv heard from many sources that im just as likely to get called up as the next man, and i have no choice, which is fair enough. but i saw someone say on a thread that if you are in full time education you are exemptcall up. can anyone give me a concrete answer?

active service is something i would volunteer for after uni, but understandably it isnt something i want to do until then.

yes if you are in full time education you are exempt.

if we were to be invaded im sure it would be a different story but that looks unlikely at the moment.

doc if you pay off my student loan you can have unlimited use of her for life, shes a looker :)
