Errrr, no, actually they all seemed to be a bunch of barely post adolescents actually! And they barely broke a sweat at all....
Quite a few things struck me while watching it though....
Promotion comes quickly...

Corporal at 22
Sgt at 27
Staff Sgt at 30.....???
The senior officer was far too arrogant to take off his shades and addressed his troops on the 'eve of battle' with them still on! Doesnt seem the best way to bond with your men with that sort of psychological barrier between them....
How could the US intelligence be so bad as to send them into two close quarter battle situations telling them the objectives would be overrun with 'Ba'ath party activists, Fedayeen, terrorists...' and in both cases the objectives were deserted!
However, I was pleased and somewhat suprised to see two of the marines taking tea with an Arab shepherd in his tent. That was not the image of the US troops we were led to believe in.
Just one question though....Are the oil wells still burning?

Just watched it (on later down here on s4c). It seemed to me that the US marines that were being filmed spent most of there time conducting assualts on empty houses, spraying them with thousands of bullets.
Most of the action came when they put a scorpion in a box with some ants and then they started to fight.
I was a bit disapointed when I expected to see Royals in action istead of the US, still it was worth a watch even if it was not the true professionals.
Glad to see no harm cooming to the yanks while watching it, although (not all) but some of them dont half talk crap but that rule exists everywhere I surpose.

Even if you join young say 17? I suppose thats pretty early promotions.
In the Canadian Forces it's slightly different
3 years in if you are very switched on to get your Corporals, 4 years average. (There is no Lance Corporal rank, Corporal is essentially that)
Master Corporal (Would be your Corporal I guess) after 6 - 8 years in.
You may achieve the lucky rank of Sgt such as my ownself, if you can put up with all of the associated nonsense for about 12 years in.
Warrent 2 after a hella along time, I don't know as im only 28.
Company Sgt Mjr after god knows how long you are in you poor SOB
RSM why didn't you leave when your 22 years were up??
I do know of a fellah who did a 'fast track,' who pissed alot of people off by becoming a 27 year old Warrent.

They appeared to be a nice buntch of blokes really, but they didn't belong there. They were nothing but Cadets (appearance and attitude wise). I also was disappionted it was the Yank forces being filmed and not our very own, but hey. It changed my opinion of US Marines at least.

Heres the breakdown for the rank structure of the U.S.M.C. And keep in mind that these are all based on something called cutting score. They take into consideration time in grade, and your time in service and come up with this magical number. Then there are so many slots available for the next rank in your mos. blah, blah, blah. What I'm getting at is the pace changes on how fast rank is picked up. if your an 0311 (rifleman) and a corporal and there are very few sgts. then the cutting score will be low. you get the idea.
Pvt.- 18-19 usually you will stay this rank about 6 months
Pfc,- maybe 9 months as a pfc.
lcpl. heres where the waiting starts. usually you will keep this about 1.5 years, but it depends on your MOS
cpl. average is about 3 years for the infantry
sgt. 5 years in service
ssgt- 8-10 yrs in service
gunny- 12-14
1st sgt- 16-18
sgt maj-20- who knows
its important to note that you will not automatticaly attain rank just because you wait long enough. esp. ssgt and above. one can very easily stay a ssgt. until retirement if they dont keep their nose clean.
Aside from that yes our marines are young esp, the lower ranks. most right out of high school when they enlist. Why? How old are your new marines???
