RMR at uni
I was just wondering, is it possible to be a member of the RMR while at university, and then leave the reserves when leaving universtiy?
i was told you can leave at any time, i know of people that have, but that you have a call up liability for the rest of your term, so in the event that WW3 broke out you could still be mobilised.
Applied: 11th November 05
Written test: Passed
Interview: Passed
Medical: Passed
PJFT: Passed 9.47
PRMC: october

You know what, I'm going to pretend that that presentation evening at RMR Bristol on the 5th of April never happend, because, apparently, everything I got told is incorrect! Not having a go at you lads but the T.O. that I spoke to said you cannot leave until your three years are up, but this is the same chap that said about no more selection weekends....
Re: RMR at uni
Yes it is, however if that is your plan (to leave RMR after uni) then aside from being able to request a discharge and still being at risk of call up for three years (if you have earned the green lid).frostie593 wrote:I was just wondering, is it possible to be a member of the RMR while at university, and then leave the reserves when leaving universtiy?
You would also be looking at a lot of disapopintment from the training team as what would be the point in wasting time in training someone who is going to walk away after training and maybe even deprive someone of a place in recruit trainingwho would have stayed on.
I for one would not see the point in training anyone knowing that. Also, knowing you want to walk away means knowing you already have a weakness in that you may not have the drive or willingness to go the distance. Afterall you don't want to be around after uni so why would you want to stay on when times get 'a little hard'.

Why can't you accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue.

If that is your solution - then there is no problem!
I had the same reservations as Skiffle, i.e.
Why would you want to join the RMR and then leave after finishing Uni.?
Your latest post answers that question and I wish you well in your future career. If you need any help just give me a PM or whatever.

Former RM of 23 years.
Now that makes more sense
So are you looking to transfer to the regular corps from the RMR or just put in for a deployment.
If it's just a deployment then there is no problems at all. If your looking to go permenant then that isn't a problem either, though you may not have some full rights as regulars though (some minor areas of pay and conditions as you would still be classified a reservist. though these are just minor niggly things that are being sorted out.
The big hinderence to getting from RMR to regular Corps at the moment is the Corps is top heavy with general duties marines. The RMR is now gearing itself to ensuring every reservist has a specalisation (Signals, Assault engineer or a rank of JNCO or above).
All the specialisations are areas were blokes are in short supply. So your RMR unit can easily find you a place with a Commando unit when you have a specialisation.
Hope that helps
