Col H. Jones VC

Post by westy_1981 »

Just wondering what people's perspectives are concerning Jones? Heroic leader or military disaster? I'm writing about this subject, so yes the topic is fairly controversial, and if any offence is caused I am genuinely apologetic. However, where would we be without a contentious issue or 2?

Cheers, Westy

Wasn't there also speculation that he was shot by his own men? That is what I heard. I'm not doubting his courage for being awarded the VC but his action was a needless one, apparenlty one of his own men shot him, in the back, because they felt it was such a bad decison. By shooting him in the back it would mean they would no longer have to follow his order to attack, which they all felt was a pointess one because it was a machine gun post they were being ordered to attack and they thought they would all be slaughterd! Anyway, as I said only what I heard, has anybody else heard this?

Student Sandhurst??????
I allways thought that was a posh drinking club.
No love for ossifers, not untill they prove themselvs.
Col Jones was the CO it was his job on the day to command 2 para to the best of his ability, critics who were not there at that moment in time and with the benifit of hindsight say that it was not his job to lead a section attack, they are of course correct, it's a corprall's job, but there are times in combat when you just gotta do what you gotta do........
As there is a large and healthy Anti Para movement out there I feel that if there was a possibility even a verry small one that the CO had been shot in the back the outcry from the para haters would have shaken the army from top to bottem,
Look at the disproportanate number of court cases brought against Paras for murder, if you want to know the truth you had to be there at that moment .
If the nearest you have been to combat is the cinima you just dont know.
The Brecon Becons still stand Pen-y Fan is still a pain it makes no differance jnr, snr, selection, it stays with you ............
