RMR to Officer in regulars

Post by GaussianEliminator »

I know that joining the RMR while at uni is a popular option that people take before attempting to gain a commision in the regulars but does anybody know if this is possible before serving the 4 years required from the reserves? Also, does anybody know if activities within in the reserves such as training and excercises clashes with education at uni, keeping in mind that uni is usually 9-4 time monday to friday?

It definitely is posible, encouraged even. In fact there was a guy going through RMR training with me recently who transfered after only 8 months or so, no problems at all. As always with these things ask your AFCO and explain to the RMR unit what you're hoping to do. So long as you ask their advice well in advance, everyone will be happy.

As for RMR clashing with education. Hmm. The official line is that the RMR recognise that your full time job/education comes first. But while it's true that they are never ever going to try to force you to go on exercises that clash, you might end up getting backtrooped for stuff that isn't really your fault. Again, make sure you keep everyone informed well in advance of any clashes and you should be ok.

Overall I'd say go for it. If nothing else it'll give you something to talk about in that dreaded AIB.
