Heights

Post by Deadhead »

I've been thinking about the tarzan course over the last few days. I don't think I've a particularly bad (or good) head for heights, but I don't want to freeze during POC. Does anybody have any advice for keeping your head together while 30 feet up in the air?

The old age saying: dont look down
Im the same, not good not bad with heights, I just think to myself Im a little high up than normal but Im still standing and I just try to think calm and act calm and sortof ignore where I am and say "so what" to myself.

Do you do the Tarzan Course on the POC? (I'm unfamiliar with the POC process)

If you do the High Obstacle course, it's literally just 2 horizonal ropes and a plank (with a gap). The ropes itself you don't really look down as you're concentrating on pulling yourself across whilst remaining balanced. I was the same with heights on the plank, but to be honest, you have the PTI's Cpl and Sgt Major watching you and shouting words of 'encouragement' so you just go for it and don't think of it.

Apparently though during training you do the Tarzan course/High obstacle course so often you get used to the heights.....kind of (so I've heard anyways).

the best thing to think about is the fact that if they were only 5 feet above the ground as opposed to 30 odd feet then you wouldnt really care would you? Its just walking across a plank or sliding across a rope or whatever but in a different place

I know it's weird if you think of it like that, I wached this video in PE about something or another and a royal marine officer put a ladder along the ground and the marines would walk from rung to rung with ease. But when he put it even five feat in the air their times were remarkebly slower and it's just all your mind. In that situation I was just talking about, the same balance was reqiured as everything else when it was laying on the ground.

Im a bit dodgy with heights, I think it's more lack of confidence than plain fear, but there's no way that's going to keep me out!

When you get there why not ask one of the PTI's for some advice. They will admire you for trying to conquer any fear or inhibitions you may have.

You dont get time to worry about things like that, simply because you dont get a break and you will be to knackered to care. honestly, I've been there!
