The 3 miler is run at a steady pace
I found the first warm up and the 3 miler the hardest basically because of the shock. Yes you do do a thorough warm up before Gym Test 1 and yes the 3 miler run is the first test.
Hopefully see you in RT Dalo mate.
Also to all those lads who think they're too old at 25 etc, there was a 32 year old and 28 year old in my room. Both passed

yeh i got a mate who was on that prmc, he was one of the guys that failed the 3 miler and got sent home. he was gutted and is doin it again in 3 months. i havnt trained with him for a long time so to be honest im not sure what his fitness levels were like. but he told me that he puts it down to doin to much running on treadmills instead of proper running. ive steered well clear of the treadmills since pjft so hopefully i wont have that problem when i go for mine on the 6th of dec.

treadmills
Ive always stayed clear of treadmills. I used to be able to run for ages on them but could barely do half that outside. Never liked gym machines either, free weights have always been the best.

I can't understand why people can't make the 3 miler then if it's run at a steady pace. Ok they might have you puffing a bit before you start but surely they've been running 3 miles in training under the required time? I thought that maybe they were running it with a slow first half and then a fast second half in which case, if you've been doing it at even pace in training, it may come as a bit of a shock. To not be able to run the 3 miler with the squad really isn't up to much, it just shows a severe lack of preperation, not to mention fitness.
I wonder what the failure rate used to be when it was 5 miles in 35 minutes. It must have been huge.

The problem with treadmill running is that it can give you a false confidence over your speed. Depending on how well they are calibrated they can be well off in real terms to the actual speed you are doing. Running outside often has people starting off too quickly and running out of steam a lot sooner than they would on a treadmill and it's just easier to quit on the road. I find treadmills are good for speedwork as your legs take less of a pounding but you have to be running long runs on the roads to build the absorbtion into your legs.
The old fellas on your PRMC, how'd they do in terms of the gym tests. I'm trying to gauge whether they had to score higher to impress the Staff or were they just amongst everyone else in terms of results. Also, what was their history? Were they ex-forces?

Plus, they're boring, there's no air passing you so you heat up faster and they call for different form than outside running (more picking feet up, as opposed to pushing off as well).Worthers Original wrote:The problem with treadmill running is that it can give you a false confidence over your speed.
