Right for all the walts out there prepping their stories SF are forces that come under the Director of UKSF within the UK. Not Paras, Marines, Blackwatch. French Foreign Legion are errr.....French and if you think they are SF then cross the channel and fark off!
FFL have multi-lingual skills because a huge percentage of their ranks are foreign. (the clue is in the name-them cunning french)
Apart from that they are infantry, not that highly trained but totally dedicated and brain washed.
Some of you book reading career consultants need to get some time in the dirt holding the line in the name of their country, not reading someone elses version of events and then quoting it as your opinion against people who dug in next to the bloke who wrote the book you read! (deep breath)
Anyway lets play these twonks at their own game:
I say that Queens college is better than any other and studying Modern economics is better than studying ancient toilet habits of the greeks! The Greeks werent SF and all hats by the way
Doc by what i mean by a special force is not if it comes under UKSF command but there what makes them 'special' compared to other units. And yes! the Foreign Legion is French! and yes! its only takes foreign recruits (french posing as swiss)! but what i was stating was my view as the FFL being a special force because you compare the FFL to any other infantry unit for example the black watch and what have you got
The FFL
-Crap Pay
-The French Government literally doesnt give a shit about you, you could drop them in the 'triangle of death' and nobody would raise an eyebrow
-Like 80% of recruits dont know a word of french meaning the FFL could go anywhere in the world and likely there will be someone who could act as a translator and would know the country
-Every recruit has to adapt to the Legion culture no matter where the hell there from
-Physical punishment is common if deserved
The Black Watch
-Good Pay
-The British Government cares because if any die the Government will lose votes and confidence and it would be controversial
-Basically every recruits Scottish! Whats the chances of one of them knowing Bosnian or French fluently
-Anyone who bullys someone would get kicked if caught
Do you know what i mean now? You dont have to be in the role of counter-terrorism to be a special force.

I can see why your calling them special, Just its a little annoying why everything has to come down to SF/Para/RM. And these conversations tend to be mainly led by students or people yet to serve.
I aint really having a go but its just that when you are in whatever unit you serve in is the best and this is what makes Brit forces tick. Comparisons are pretty pointless because a platoon of Paras couldnt fly Harries or man a type 22 frigate. When it comes down to infantry there are differences in training, insertion techniques, approaches and roles.
When you join up whatever unit you serve in is the best. Its instilled into you and you live and breath it with pride. Its what makes you get on with the job in hand because you volunteered to be there and you and your oppos believe in each other and the unit.
Inner bitching is present at every level from section to troop to squadron/company to unit/regiment and so on. Its what makes you try harder and achieve better.
What Im bitching about is comments from people yet to serve in any unit saying a green lid is better than a maroon lid or a hackle or a busbee. Fine for those serving or have served to do it because they know what they are on about. But for someone whos only read a book to join in and gob off is wrong. And I would also say that any post that disagrees will come from a student or someone yet to serve.
But.. this is a open forum and people can make comments freely, you can bitch about the best unit when you have never served in any and the ones who have served can bitch back utilising their freedom of speech.
Noone will ever win because someone else will always add their two pennies worth in and then stinky will come along and say berets are crap anyway its the colour pants you wear thats important

Presuming that was aimed as me:
I am not a student. So no I can't teach you about student life, but maybe a little about respect for people who deserve it, rather than a bunch of dimwitted wannabes. This whole thing sparked from me saying that the Black Watch deserved respect. The fact that this lot take such offence in that just shows to me their insecurity in themselves. This country owes a lot to the Black Watch, seeing as there have been a large number of wars since 1725, many of which have determined the fate of this country. What I am saying is that they at least deserve some dignity, because if it wasn't for them, this country could be speaking French and singing the Marseillaise at footie matches, or talking German, walking around in leather chaps and eating sauerkraut at Christmas. This is my last post on this forum, and I am adament I won't be missed.
Over and out.

Your profile says student not that my post was actually referring to you or anyone in particular.
I was just trying to stop the slagging match by people who dont know any wiser.
I have never had anything to do with the Black Watch but would agree that from what Ive heard they derve respect. But I would leave comments on the black watch to someone with closer ties personally.
No reason to leave Big_Al, but freedom of choice etc etc

Well theyve gone through 22 Weeks of Specialised Para Infantry training which i hear is harder therefore if someone failed p-company wouldnt he just re-do it with more physical preperation beforehand?para wrote:This is my last post on this discussion, all I'll say on whos better etc etc (u can argue all day)
Where do you think people who fail p-coy go....home?
No they go to their local infantry regiment (most of the time).
