I can't believe no-ones mentioned Lowa's! OK, they are they are around the £100 mark but they are the nuts.

I think they full name is Lowa Combat boot - go try em on - i've had mine 3 years...

The ol Hi-tec Magnums are great for walking short distances and doing the odd sprint! There almost like trainners and are very light with comfy solves. They are ideal for door work and security, but take them on the hills or a long yomp and you shall be in agony. I now utilise mine purely for door work as wearing them in yomp training gave me blisters and no real ankle support.

Meindl Meindl Meindl... Very excellent Boots but a bit pricey.

Used mine for 4 years now, got them resoled and new rand put on last christmas. Were excellent,.. unfortunately the new sole is not 100% waterproofed as the rand, sole and the leather has a small hole somewhere, bah humbug!

Will buy Lowa Mountain Boot next though as they are a bit lighter.

lowa`s are very good boots with a gortex lining although not everyone gets on with them,there around £140.alternative to them are altberg`s sell for around £90 very comfy but dont have a gortex lining.i`ve got both(ooooooohhhhhh)and i use them for different things depends how wet your planing on getting for yourself altberg`s would be good.look like scarpas but lighter. magnums are the boots that appear when the bft comes around,and all the phys biffs ditch as much weight as they can.

I got my Lowa's from a mail order shop for £48 ooop north somewhere (Sheffield I think )

They were second hand - ex german army, although they resoled them and they are already broken in.

Trouble is I can't remember the name of the shop and an Internet search doesn't help either - don't suppose anyone knows the name of the shop??

Arrrrhhhhh!!! Lowa's, the boot that Terminator thru away for being to macho! Got a pair about 6 months ago, best ive had. Very good tabbing boot I found, particularly in shit terrain, superb ankle support.

My only critic would be I diddent like the insole, to weak. But then again everyone expects you to put in soberthanes.

I wouldn't use it as preference in an OBUA enviroment as mentioned earlier, but then it isnt designed for that being a heavy mountain boot.

Ive just looked at the Lowa's on www.adaptoutdoors.co.uk (an outdoor shop in Liverpool), but they are as bit on the expensive side (£140, expensive or about right?). Then again, I pay about £70 for a piar of trainers (habit thats got to stop).

Someone mentioned Brashers. The Fellmaster Classics look alright.

Try scraping the paint off the brass eyelets round the lace holes and cutting three inches off each lace mate. Every little helps

Very old thread I know. But I said in it I would buy the Lowas later. I did and frankly they are great! The insole is crap though. Chuck in a superfeet green insole and bob's your uncle. Great for a heavy pack as supurb ankle support. Only thing is that they have a slightly smaller foot volume than the Meindl boots (these are freakishly airy though).

Hanwag are supposed to make magical boots. Even better than the Lowas. I'll tell you again on this post in 4 years when the Lowas are too knackered and I need another pair of boots.

Or if anyone wants a good condition Lowa size 8.5 sooner.

I'll second that on the han wags for yomping, they're the muts nuts, but for a day to day pair of boots, running and speed marching i wear half canvas magnums which are like slippers!
