Household Cav

Post by flynn101 »

Im going to the AFC this sept and then onto the paras but im more interested in the recce side of soldiering so im thinkin about the household cav as a para but do u have to do time in household cav before doing your para training or is it possible to enter as one and do have to get into the ceremonial side of things or is it optional. By the way there website isnt very informative and no replys saying how long it takes to clean your kit

Cheers

Don't mean to sound critical but you don't really seem to know what you want. HorseGuards and Para Reg are worlds apart. I suggest that if you like the idea of poncing round Buck house but think that jumping out of perfectly servicable aircraft would be really exciting as well try this career path-
Household Division- Foot Guards(ie Scots,Irish,Welsh, Grenadiers and Coldstream). Public Duties (PD's) are not optional! If you join the Division you will do them!!!
Complete Junior Brecon
Pass either COP or Sniper Course
then and only then apply for the now reformed ;
Guards Parachute Company

Be warned though the selection ( run by the Guards )and pre para is designed to mentally and physically destroy the average bod. The gen I got was that the 1st course was so difficult attendance was by invitation only and still resulted in less than 20% completing.
Good luck!

Oh and I wouldn't go posting anything entitled "Household Cav" on the Para Reg forum if I were you! They aren't the closest of friends!

I wonder what role the Guards Parachute company actually has. The line infantry regiment that makes up part of 16AAB has a boring role compared with the 3 parachute battalions. I am right in thinking they only work with fixed wing aircraft, securing airfields...amongst other boring tasks.

If you want to be Airborne, join the Paras. If you want to be a para wannabe, then join one of these units such as the Guards parachute company.

And if you want to be Airborne, dont go anywhere near the Houshold Cavalry!!

Look i aint into all that cermonial shit and definatly not the guards but the only reason i would join as part of the household cav is cause they are recce soldiers and thats the path that i want to take as an army career. Ok ill ask one question if i want to become a recce soldier in 16 air assault brigade (as a para) should i do it in the parachute regiment or join the household cav and become a para in that and so forth. thanks for feedback btw

If you want to be a "recce soldier", join the Paras and if you pass, try and go for Pathfinder Platoon selection.

hell of alot of difference between armoured recce (household Cav) and infantry recce.

Armoured vehicles being the obvious thing that stands out.

If you want to be a leaping out of plane sneaking ahead of the main force recce then Paras it is, if you want the ceremonial hassle and an ickle tanky to drive then go household cav.

I think you need to do more research before you decide as from your posts I think what you know so far is pure fantasy.

Try the search option on here bud and sit and read or even better ask AFCO what the options are.

Good luck

sorry doc but ive got a general dislike for royals especially prince william and harry joining the army saying they dont want any special treatment when its obvious they would get it and finding out that harry wants to go into the household cav so he can play polo has put me right off imagine havin him as your platoon commander. And why does the duke of edinburgh have some many medals the only person i can recall rivaling him is general patton i can hardly think the duke can compare himself to him

Actually the Duke of Edinburgh served with distinction with the Royal Navy in WWII and saw more real action than Patton ever did...

Not really the type of statement you should be making when the majority of the people using these forums (the people you are asking for advice!) have either taken the Oath or aspire to in the near future! As Doc advised maybe you should consider FFL as they have a airborne contingent!

As for Jobags comments about GPC maybe he should refrain from making "para wannabe" comments until he isn't one of them! GPC are line infantry with a long and proud history who also happen to be parachute insertion capable. Maybe he should speak to somebody from Para Reg who was in the Falklands War and I'm sure they'll mention the name "Tumbledown" at some point ! They are not paras they are guards but then again your not a para yet either are you!

Excuse my ignorance please.

What does AFC mean?

Gore.

Major Kong, "Shoot, a fella could have a pretty good weekend in vegas with all that stuff....."
Gore, "The first casualty of war is your underpants....."

your in the same line of things as i am. im RAC and want to do my wings but looks like im gonna have to transfer to para after doing p-company. i wanted to do p-company then return to unit even though the RAC have no airborne role. my advice would be if ya want your wings go paras and if you want recce and you think your good enough try pathfinders. its a mixed up world
