from reserves to regulars....

Post by chris78290 »

originally posted this in the rmr forum, but no response...

just a question out of curiosity, was having a read through some posts about RMR and seen some people were doing it with intention of joining RM in the future, whats the deal with transferring, any selection process or training to do or is it just a straight swap....??

There was a lad in med sqn at Logs back in 95 who was RMR on a full time reserve draft, theres some sort of scheme, not to sure on the proper name, where RMR can enlist for a regular draft in a shortage unit or specialisation.
He did a year or two at Logs if I remember right and was a cracking bloke, (cant remember his name) and went to another unit after.

I knew a bloke who joined from the RMR.

He had to redo the entire Commando course from square one but was allowed to wear his Lid n Flashes from day one. Also saw an Ex Para going though training and he was allowed to wear his Maroon beret. He passed out and went HW as that was what he did in the Paras. I do remember he got some right stick from the very disgruntled Serving Para PW instructor who was on exchange with the Corp.

The ones who amaze me are the guys who take a Corp Commision and redo the Commando course from beginning to end with the YO's course. That is dedication in my eyes. I'm damn sure I wouldnt fancy going though it all again a couple of years after I'd done it.

Same here regarding Cops Commission.

I served with a lad who joined 40 cdo from the RMR (was in 23 SAS before that - I doubted it but it was confirmed as gen) for Op Haven in Northern Iraq. He didn't do the 30 weeks - just went to Centurion to become 'unrubberised' as he put it. He got a bit of stick for being a back door entry - not from me though. Also served with a couple of lads who sacked the RMR and turned up as nods to do the 'full ish' no green lids back to square one. Funny thing is they still got grief for being 'rubbers'. Bit of bootneck logic in there.

There is an RMR signaller attached to a fighting company at 42. He's still RMR but took a full-time draft. Although he is a rubber dagger, he gets the respect he deserves. He's a non-emotional yomper, most signallers are, and he cracked a Norway (which tis he truest test of soldiering ability post training).
