I can Remember seeing over three hundred RN ships lined up at Spithead for the Queens Coronation Review in 1953, 50 years later the RN has just 35 ships in it's whole fleet. Yet you ask if it will still be a power in Europe,
No disrispect to all those of the RN but the figures speak for them selfs

I will probably be corrected by the more knowledgeable. Doesn't a modern day frigate have more devastating hitting power than an old battle ship? Surely it is not the number of ships that you have, but the amount of fire power.

Aye - Andy. :o

Yes agreed Andy, but what happens when if they ever get the new aircraft
carriers. Now they are talking about building two of them, just how many of those 35 ships will be needed as escorts to them. Now it is going to take about five minimum well thats a third of the Navy tied up. Then about another five or six ships will be in for repair or upgrades. That does not leave a lot of ships to do any thing else.

Sounding sexy is one thing, fighting is another. I stood and watched a beautiful ship enter Portland and was surprised to hear an old CPOGI comment that she had extraordinary lines, but would never stand up in a fight. He was right, she was sunk by an exocet in '82.
You should talk to somebody who gives a f**k.

as some of you may have known i recently went for my RT tests...

i was given a book to learn the ships n what not the navy has for my interview....

in the book it says there is 136...including submarines, mine sweepers, store ships etc aswel as the aircraft carriers, frigates, destroyers etc..

hope that helps and i think our navy is proberly in the best shape its been in for a while specially after WWII ...due to diplomatic treaties and arms bans it will never be the all conqeuring navy we used to have and plus it will neva beat the American navy who have endless amounts of money todo as they please...even develope flying saucers using Nazi technology!!

Ah... Davo...... but how many are out of mothballs, have a full complement, fully fueld up, stored and ready to go?
My guess is that in that 136 they have included the University patrol boats that are used by the university reserve, a few harbour tenders and a RIB or two...............................Me cynical Noooooooooooooooo

it seemed to me, during reading that not many had been mothballed...the type 23 frigates for example are only new...

maybes some of them yes like sir galahad and the older vessels

we'll never know till a nice RN person tells us exactly (hint hint  )

When you check on the blue water ships that are ocean going fighting vessels then you will find it is 35 ships. Many of the minesweeprs that went to Gulf had to be shipped out. Whch does not really put them into the deep sea class of fighting ship. No I am not saying that they are not important but they are not ships of the line.
