Any advice on these symptoms?

Post by GJimbo »

Hey all,

Over the last week or so, I have started to get the following symptoms during training:

- Feel sick (nausea), normally during hard anaerobic excerises (seems quite normal though)
- Very, very dry mouth with thick, sticky saliva
- Bowel irritation (sometimes)
- High heart rate within just a few minutes of starting (throughout training)
- Out of control breathing within just a few minutes of starting (throughout training)
- High body temperature within just a few minutes of starting (throughout training)
- Fatigued (impaired physical performance), sometimes even when just starting

Other things I am experiencing are: insomnia, impatience and irritability.

These are quite new within the last week or so, before which, I seemed perfectly fine. At first, I thought it was chronic (?) dehydration, but I have upped my water in take over the last few days and drinking more during training, but it hasn't seemed to have done the trick.

I know I ain't over-training, because once I finish my training, I quickly return to my rest state, normally with an heart rate of 60BPM ie feel the same before I started training, just a few minutes after training.

Could it be some kind of psychological problem?

I thought I'd just bring it up here first and see what you guys have to say before I seek professional advice. I've been trying to self-diagnose, but I think we all know the ramifications of that - within a week, I'll be in a rubber ball thinking I have one week to live

Anyway, thanks in advance for any advice.

Go see a doctor I would say, just to be sure about things. I used to get some of those symptoms: dry mouth, high heart rate and fatigue. But that was just because I was just starting training and didnt drink enough and was trying to achieve things my body wasnt capable of just yet. But they went away pretty quick. Iv never had the other ones so I cannot comment on them im afraid.

See a Doc!

I try to refrain from offering medical advice on here, incase you die then sue me!

Sounds like overtraining to me, which shouldnt be ignored as the symptons are harmful if they persist.

3 things

a) See a Doctor to get a checkup (as the bowel problems need an explanation) also get your BP checked (on both arms)
b) Ease up and have a rest week
c) Drink water and stacks of it, with some electrolytes.

Dont skip the doctor bit, because something fixed now before it gets worse may not stop you training or damage you, but it will if left.

Let us know how you get on, if you were last seen heading up a hill in shorts and you dont post for ages, then we'll assume you snuffed it and it wasnt overtraining.

Thanks for the advice.

I have booked in to see my GP tomorrow. Today, I'll just take it easy until I find out if there is anything wrong with me. Just to think, I have an appointment at my AFCO on Wednesday this week to start the application process

I used to be paranoid about watching my heart rate to make sure i was in the right zone for training and it would make it go all over the show, i find only checking on it every 4-5 minutes does the trick now.

Best of luck at the doctors GJimbo, as its already been said, let us know how you get on.

I sometimes get the very very dry mouth, This is when i breathe in too fast ie if im sprinting or doing a really hard short run. So your dry mouth might be caused by your out of control breathing. best of luck.

How do you find out what your heartbeat should be? I try to do it around 160-180 when I train, but I dont know if this is what I should be training at

For cardio it should be 70-80% of your maximum heart rate, to work that out its 220 - your age.

So my max is 201 as i'm 19

As well as drinking as much water as possible it might be worth checking your diet. Dizziness like you described can be due to having an iron deficiency (iron comes from, among other things, red meat). I would imagine that the food you are getting is such that it meets the needs of any recruit, but maybe in your case you need a bit more of a couple of types of food group to sustain your energy levels.

I'm not a doctor or anything and I'm sure other people will have their own opinion. I'm just going by what happened to a mate of mine

I'm not being horrible here but I can't understand why you have posted asking for a health diagnosis on a military forum?

It seems obvious that most people on here can't help you, though they will try their best, and you would be far better off consulting you doctor.

Doc has offered advice and it sounds like common sense.

Hi TT Fresh,

I was just hoping to see if anyone else has had the same symptons, and what they did to cure them. I am training for the marines after all, and this is related to my training - I presume other "potential" marines are doing similar training, so I also presumed that out of the many people who use these boards, someone may have had the same symptoms.

Anyway, hopefully, I will get a complete diagnosis/advice from my GP in the morning (which I will post here), so that should anyone else have similar symptons, then there'll be advice here which they maybe able to use.

Nausea can be attributed to running to soon after eating, or running after eating greasy foods
Sticky saliva is normal
Bowel irritation is called 'Runners bowel' or 'runners trots' - is caused by many things, like poor diet, or just by by the motion creating a 'sloshing' effect.
Out of control breathing, your running, gonna get outta breath.
High heart rate, mine 55 resting, 70 when moving around, and gets to about 100-120 within around 30 seconds of excersise, peaks at around 160-180 on a 7-7.30 minute mile run.
PJFT : 9.12
PRMC : 24th May... FAILED
Going back - sometime after Chrimbo
