Americans

Post by AmericanAirborne »

I am an American and proud of it. But often times whenever I hear somebody from Britain talking about America they always have something bad to say. Why is that you dislike us? And if you dont dislike us I would like to hear your opinion.
Another thing, what do you think about our military. In reality, I honestly think that British troops are trained much better than ours. We rely too much on technology and not our own mind and body. I would like to hear some other opinions on this also. Thanks in advance.

I don't speak for everyone, and I'm not of the eligible age to vote yet, so you're free to disregard what I've got to say.

Anyway, I don't think many British people have a problem with the American people, but I think when it comes to the Foreign Policy of your Government, then I'm sure we're not the only people who hold our breath while something is happening regarding said Foreign Policy.

I wouldn't know anything about your Military, besides what I've read and seen in the media. I'd prefer to not have an opinion on something like that rather than spout off some nonsense.

America is a great country............the people are friendly enough...........a bit on the porky side. I'm not into the whole 'fake tits' thing though.........

However, Bush is a scaremonger twat. And thats why most of the world dislikes America..........

I have as many people from my family living in America as I have here, my sisters boy is in one of your top military units. Though I must say that some people feel that it is the in thing to poke a bit of fun at America. By the way lets say Airborne all the way.

I personally haven't got anything against the Americans; at times you have a 'gun-ho' attitude when it is not neccessarily needed to be, and I think this is derived partly from the attitude of your present president.

But isn't the feeling mutual? I saw a piece in the Telegraph on the American insight of how the British view the issues surrounding the election next week - it was harsh to say the least! I see if I can find a link.

Hey AmericanAirborne, I'm an American just like you and have some friendly advice: Don't worry so damn much about being liked. Americans are so pathetic in this regard. Ooooh, do they like us? I've had some of the most unbelievable conversations with fellow Americans who are about to travel to Europe. They act as if everyone there is treating their visit as some sort of state occasion and is just dying to talk about the Big Issues with them.

Relax, I tell ya. I was in Europe last summer and everyone was just fine. No one -- and I mean not a single person -- yammered at me about politics. Of course, if they had, I'd have told them not to blame me for the Feckless Chimp but instead to feel sorry for me because, after all, I have to call that outrageous faker my president and listen to his brain-dead followers on television, and then listen as the news media takes it seriously in the name of "balance."

As for fat people, well, I saw plenty of native fatsos in Europe. Especially Britain and Germany. And you should hear what the northern Italians say about the fat, olive-oil slurping hogs in the south. Nothing the Yankees say about the rednecks compares to the insults that go on ... Seriously though, everyone should be spared the whinings of a poor insecure American who not only wants to own the entire world but demands to be loved as well. Now, wanna know what I really think? 8)

p.s.: When you're in France, just make sure to say bon jour on your way in, au revoir on your way out, to compliment the food and the wine, and to live with the fact that table service is half as fast as it is in the U.S. and that you can't get a glass of ice water to save your life. :)
To think of the future and wait was merely another way of saying one was a coward; any idea of moderation was just another attempt to disguise one's unmanly character; ability to understand the question from all sides meant that one was totally unfitted for action; fanatical enthusiasm was the mark of a real man -- Thucydides

I am by no means worried about what they think. I was just curious about what other views are out there. It is not like I am going out whining "oh why dont they like us?". I just wanted to hear some other opinions. Because here, you get one viewpoint and thats it. I want as many different views as possible.

I'm an American and I don't give a flying Fark at a rolling douhnut what anyone thinks about me.
Lets stop making assumptions and wildly misguided pre-judgements about each other.I was born a Brit but am proud to be an American.
I just missed the Mayflower by a few hundred years.
So get off the yank bashing and lets talk about the French.

Sod this picking on the Yanks.

Lets all gang up on the Cloggies! (Dutch)

Uncle Sams Misguided Children (USMC) whenever I had ought to do with them were always pretty good at what they do/did.

The main problem I observed was the "Gung HO!" attitude of all the Yank Armed Forces. Not knocking it but sometimes Nicely, Nicely and a little bit less "Kill the Mothers! Kill the Mothers!" works 100% better with certain Members of the Human Race. Learning from their mistakes is what the Brits have done. And it seems to work. Hopefully the Yanks will do the same over time.

Well the only thing I have to say in a military regard to our cousins in America is I wish we had your rations, while on a long exercise in Poland due to the foot and mouth crisis we couldn't use our own Ratpacks so we got MRE's for the whole exercise, at first the Q man only gave us one per 24Hrs, then we found out you are meant to get 3 for a 24Hr period!, we were all over the moon as there is a lot of stuff in each MRE, Never had so much food on exercise and 90% of them were gorgeous, proper lunches, cakes, M&M's,crakers, Peanut butter etc..and 3 boil in the bags for 24hrs what a treat.
Damm you lucky gits, however a lot of people say how the American kit is so much better than ours, well on a individual level I dont think that is so, our PLCE webbing/Bergens etc.. I feel are alot better than the ALICE system that stuff looks crap!
I personnally dont mind Americans, but sometimes they are just a bit annoying, as I tend to feel that you without meaning to sometimes come across as quite arrogant i.e we are the best etc.. But I am sure sure you think the same way about us.

Here is a little American/English joke for ya any way.
The American Navy and the British Navy are both on Exercise, and the two forces happen across each other,
The Captain of the American Aircraft Carrier radios over to the British Aircraft Carrier and says the following message
"Hello hows the second largest Navy in the World today Captain?"
To which the British Captain replies" We are fine hows the second best Navy in the World doing Captain?"

The Americans I have met have been mostly fine. We seem to get allot of them in my pub, as well as Canadians aussies etc.

You guys are ok though, a little demanding at times and a little arrogant, but hey, such is life, I only ever had one yankee causing probs (wholley before you go off at me he was from the north  ) they also seem to tip allot to, what’s that about? Not that I’m complaining mind 8)

As for your forces I cant really make an informed judgement so am not going to.

I never have hated ordinary Americans, but I am not at all pleased with the current or past presidents. Especially Bush and being a neo conservative, fundamentalist Christian he worries me.
Their foreign policy is predicated on the misapprehension that the rest of the world should share the same political and economic values. Almost every positive act of foreign intervention, one can highlight when its adventures have had less than benign consequences. The way they bully other countries, undermine authority of the UN and constantly violate international law is appalling.
America embodies the misuse of power. It is the responsible for Middle-East conflict, the war on Iraq and the US unjust policies in the Arab and Islamic world. 100,000 civilians killed by air strikes in Iraq. Years of US sponsored Israeli murder in Palestine which has succeeded in creating hatred and wrath among the Arab masses. Is it any wonder these people fight back? Who the hell is 'the West' to adopt the moral high ground?

You want 'Freedom Fries' with that?
