Just gone into Hunter Company today after getting a stress fracture in my foot :( .

With Baptist Run insite it looked good for the 1st phase of training until week 11 on the range when we had our first proper speed march (3 Miles). After about 1 mile I felt my foot crap out on me and despite finishing the rest of the run I was left in a lot of pain. I cracked on and got through week 11 and 12 and passing my APWT (Shooting Test).

But on the Monday of week 13 It wasn't any better so I headed over to med center (as I had no chance of doing bottomfield this week) and as soon as the doctor felt it, knew it was a stress fracture and I had an X-ray to confirm the bad news. :( .

I've been given 18 days sick leave and will be in Hunter till after Christmas around 8 weeks they reckon but ive been told (by other Hunter lads) to expect double that. So any of you guys starting basic in the new year might well prof If you get this hoffin bloke join your troop :wink: .

PS Spoke to fodd today and he's in Hunter 2 troop now and only a few weeks away from rejoining a troop at week 9.

Really bad news mate, enjoy your leave though and I hope your foot heals up quick so you can get back into it.

You only start speed marching in week 11? :o I find that quite amazing. You mean you have not done any tabbing/yomping before week 11 :-?

I think even the 'hat' regiments in the army start tabbing before that. :P

James wise up mate,the Marines class a speed march as a run, and dont start calling other people Hats until you have a Maroon lid on. :evil:

Ok firstly, cheers for the info, i never knew marines called a speed march running. Secondly, i dont call people hats, that is why i used ' '. OK?

Just for an idea of what its like, is this speed march in Marching order or webbing +rifle ?

You do your first yomp in week two with fighting order (21lbs) minus your rifle (4 miles), week 7 its done with 45lbs and rifle (4 miles), week 10 we did about 4 miles with 69lbs. Speed marching is around 10 min/miles with 21lbs and rifle.

and what stage of training do you do it?

I can answer that if you like. Its done weeks 11 and 12, It involves 100m, 200m, 300m, 400m shoots in various fire positions prone, kneeling un/supported, sitting, fire trench and standing. All done with SUSAT sights. You used to do a criteria iron sight shoot but now it isn't criteria just practice. You also shoot with the respirator. To get a marksman on it you must pass each shoot first time and get 90% of the targets down. Its done on the ETR (Electronic Target Range) where the targets pop up and you have a few seconds to shoot them.

Is there any running involved mate? The PWT I did with the Canadian Army I believe we started at the 400, then ran to the 300 and fired, ran to the 200 and fired etc. Kind of makes it tough to get your breathing right, so if you're not fit you're screwed.

At some of the ranges you start 5m back then when the target pops up you have a few seconds to run forward and adopt the relevent fire position and shoot. But nothing more than that because of safety reasons there will be up to 11 other guys standing next to you.
