Abseiling

Post by Guest »

On Sunday 12th 2004 I took part in the Millennium Stadium abseil for charity. There were one hundred people taking part in the 145ft abseil who all had to raise £150 to be able to take part in the event.

I was wondering if anybody here has made any achievements of this sort e.g. abseiling, rock climbing etc and if so then please share the details? Thank you for your time.

Hello Lee.

I went to the south of France on an adventure holiday with school and did an 80ft abseil which had a 60ft overhang. I didn't have gloves on though so I couldn't go very fast and ended up with black palms.
I've also done the usual wall climbing thing that just about everyone has done. It's fun to use colour coded pieces, makes it harder. Full respect to free climbers though, crazy b*st*rds.

cheers

When you said there was a 60ft overhang what does that mean? I'm hoping to take part in many more activites including free climbing. Do you intend on try anything new of this sort?

Take care

Guys forget the climbing walls, get yourself a climbing package and get out on some rock, there are loads of companies that will set you up with an instructor to make sure you don’t kill yourself. It beats indoor wall climbing every time.

You lads want to try Abseiling Old Style. :D Good hemp rope, personally made figure of 8 twisted and legs placed through so your sitting in it, main rope through fig 8, up and over left shoulder across to right shoulder and right hand... to break bring rope in right hand to chest......to descend open arm out to fully extended. Also advisable to have a piece of leather sewn across shoulders to stop burns...Leather gloves advisable Try abing out of a heilo at 300 ft....Excellent fun.....none of you're Karabina and fig.8's in those days.

Top stuff! :D

Like Mike said, forget all these fancy harnesses, walls and whatnot, the best abseilling i've done has been over a variety of 20-40 foot rock faces around Snowdonia with nothing more than 50 metres of rope.

Well done on your charity event Lee.
If it doesn't hurt it's not worth doing!

I've done some climbing in Snowdonia, plus some around where I live. Also done a fair amount of indoor climbing. Well done on your abseil Lee.

Do recruits have to do a forward abseil at CTC?

Well I have done quite a bit of climbing, i.e multi pitch but I am not a fan of it, bloody hard work and dam scary, I got to do loads of this stuff as when I was in the Army I got a posting to the Joint services adventure traing centre in Bavaria for a while, but then the firemen decided they couldn't be bothered to go to work so my posting got called short to be put on a Green Goddess.
Also done loads of skiing, got my BSP Alpine was being put forward for ASP and Instuctors course but due to the strike I missed out, also done about 60 skydives( sport parachuting) and got my Cat 8( A liecence) in skydiving.
Done kiaking and I think it was a 3 or 2 star or something I got, done white water rafting which was quite cool( literally).
Speaking of climbing walls, me and a couble of my mates at Bavaria used to play a game, when you reached the top of the climb you would have to launch your self as far as possible from the wall and the guy that was belaying would have to stop you as close to the ground as possible to see who would win etc.., very stupid looking back now and lucky none was hurt+ we went using absailing ropes to do it, however was good fun at the time.

Try Absailing from a Chopper. The vortex from the blades can sometimes totally bugger you up as in you can't go up or down but just stay where you are.

I do some kayaking too, will get round to doing my 3 star next year. Haven't done much multi-pitch climbing, but I found it pretty good.

Lee, This search on google turned up a load of info about climbing in the UK, might be something in there you'll find useful
