Straw Mate,

You don't need your wings to go SF.

Once you complete selection they teach you how to jump out of plane's before progressing onto parachuting :P

That's why they are called "Special Forces" :D

What sense of the word "special" do you mean?

Is it normal to find jumping out of a plane enjoyable?

Rabby,
I've known quite a few people who are/were freefall trained but hated being in the middle of a sym 30 [port and starboard sticks following each other out the door]. Don't get military parachuting and sport parachuting mixed up.
In sports parachuting, unless your doing link ups etc, you are in control of what is happening. In the middle of a sym 30 you hope everybody is as good as you.
I do agree that if you don't "GO" on the sports side, I would think it unlikely that you would "GO"on the military side. There are always exceptions.
I had a refusal in a stick once by a lad on his 9th jump. I think that took more "Guts" than to have gone.

I would think that it is best to get your wings first, it would be a pity to go all the way through the selection and then find you can't do the jumps.
I know it sounds silly but people do pass their P Course then freeze in the door.

An even better idea would be to get some kind of military training in first as well. Thinking of SAS selection when you haven't even started phase 1 soldier training is a bit like thinking of learning to fly a plane before you've even tried riding a bicycle.

Hi bigbart,
I'm not sure I agree with you.
I joined the Royal Marines at 18 years old. I didn't know much about the RM let alone SBS or SAS. I had never heard of them.
I went through training without those units really registering.
I then did a tour with a Commando unit (40Cdo. in Malta).
During that tour I had three SBS guys in my Troop. (B Troop).
I didn't stand a chance!! I was bushwhacked!! And have never regretted it.
It does point out the value of having SB guys in a regular unit. (Something I'm not sure happens now).
The point I am trying to make is - that you do not need prior knowledge or fitness to make it in the Forces. (Apart from a general fitness.)
You will be trained!! (Walters and Nobbers, need not apply!!!)

Sneaky,
Not sure if they still do it since all that joint SF stuff came about, but from what I can remember, the guys used to get drafted out to a Unit on a broadening billet after completing Jnrs/Snrs.

No worries, mate. I wasn't being aggressive. I just meant if you were thinking of attempting SAS selection, take it one step at a time. Like serving for a while first. I'm not pretending to be an expert, mind. All I know about SF is the stuff I've read about. I just know it has a really low pass rate. And I also read that If you're not already para trained, you do the jump course as part of your training.
