Hey gang,

I've just been to collect my A level results, and found that I managed 3 D's, which I'm not impressed about as I have started my application for a commission. I had my initial interview yesterday, and when I was leaving I was told "Here's my card, if you get a C and two D's Tomorrow, then give me a ring and I'll see what I can do". At the end of the day that's the hand I've dealt to myself and it's down to me to deal with it.

I've got a place on the Commissioner's Club in September, and thanks to a very understanding lieutenant down at the TA barracks the oppotunity to go away on weekends with them to get a feel for it. My options are now as follows:

A) Whinge about how badly done to I am
B) Join as a Marine
C) Do resits and carry on with my application

Always one for a challenge, I think I'll do some resits please!!

I think that I've worked hard to try for a commission in the Royal Marines, and giving up now would not only be a waste of time and effort, but an exercise in what those who really want in on the Marines don't do.

Anyway, my original reason for posting; is or has anyone been in the same boat as I have, and taken resits? Anyone else not quite got the results for a commission or just done worse than they expected? I'd be delighted to hear from any of you who have done well.

It's hard for todays students to have their results devalued by the cries of "dumbing down!!", but I sincerely hope that you have the results you worked and hoped for.

As you were.

The RM recruits something like 60 Officers a year or some mad figure like that - of that 60 only 2 dont have degrees (ie only A-Levels).

If I were you I'd go in as a Marine, you can always go before the AIB and become a Officer later on if you decide thats what you want. I could have applied as a Officer myself, I have a diploma in IT, a MCSA, plus 3 A-Levels.......

The Army recruits Officers with A-Levels.......? Take my advice mate, DO NOT WASTE TIME GETTING INTO DEBT! Get out into the world now, things are changing and you wont regret it (education is turning into a money making enterprise)............

I got my results today and I failed them both Maths and Physics, 2U's. I wasn't supprised though as they were very hard and most of my time was spent training for PRMC and training, or thinking about starting training so my A Levels were not highest priority.
Passed PRMC 17th December 2003

Started Basic 5th July 2004 880 Troop, Jan 2005 886 Troop, June 2005 893 Troop, July 2005 895 Troop

Got MD 3rd November 2005

8% of those who go to the POC make it as Officers in the Royal Marines, its a hard slog but if its what you wanna do and what you've dreamt about don't accept anything less.

If it were me I would do the resits and go for it. Difference this time around is you know that you need to concentrate on your studies and the physical side can take a back seat, for now anyway.

Good luck with it and let us know which route you decide to take.

I had 2 B's and 2 C's in my AS but i thought you only needed two E's at A-level to join as a officer?

I think its 2 D's... not sure if an E is a pass, and it says 2 passes...

But dont be discouraged if you didnt get ur grades... My m8 just got BDE when he was predicted ABC! He needed ccc for his offer and still got in... Be persistent. :drinking:

Yeah I've sent an email off, and I'll call in sometime this week too. I think I'm going to go in for resits. The only reason I'm not going to a Uni is because I don't want to, I want out of schools now!

This time round I'll be more motivated, before I felt that because I cruised through my GCSE's that I'd cruise through this time. Learn from your mistakes eh?

I was told that the RM only accept people with grades A-C adding to 140 or more, but as with all of the services, rules were meant to be bent, twisted, turned around and set on fire so some do get through with less. Even though, I almost certainly wouldn't get through without at least one C or above.

Be persistent. You're right. It pays off.

I got mine today as well. Got a D in geography, an E in History and a U in PE (which im changing to an E at AS).

Shit results but im not really bothered as I had no intention to go to uni, at least not until im older. Ive decided to put off joining the Marines for a few months now. Going to concentrate on fitness, get a civvie job, save up for a few months and then do a diving course in Thailand which will take about 3 months. Then ill apply for the Marines.

Right, I've been in this situation, here's how it went for me:

My A-Level results were shite. First year I achieved a 'C' in Sociology and a 'D' in English Literature. However, in my second year I walked away with straight 'E's in Sociology, English and Law. Why? I simply lost interest and at that point in time, had basically had enough of "education" in general.

Nowadays i'm studying for a BA (Hons) Degree in Outdoors Education & Adventure Recreation, whilst serving in the T.A as a Signaller. Since leaving College and getting involved in the outdoors, i've aspired to joining the Marines - as I can get paid for doing the things I enjoy most. Thought about taking full advantage of my degree and trying for a Commission too. Went through the regular channels and was told that I did not have the required 140 UCAS points needed for an RM Commission (I had 130). Knackers, but having thought about it and spent more time in the T.A, I really couldn't see myself as an Officer - i'd much rather be taking the piss with the lads! Anyhow, i'm still as enthusiastic as ever and can't wait to get on with becoming a Marine.

Congratulations to you all on your results (Commiserations to anyone who got worse results than me :D)

I got my results today aswell (actually yesterday, it's 02:56).
I got:

Media Studies - U
Design Technology - U
Sports Studies - D

I was thinking about officer at the start of 6th form but really didnt think I could lead a body of men, I'm not quite ready for that. I also have the same frame of mind as AC, I just couldn't be arsed towards the end of school. Lots of people also talk about 'not being ready to learn til later in life'. I just take life as it comes.
My mate got straight A's!! Makes me sick. And he did minimal revision. Just a regular Steven Hawking.

Well done everyone, or not, depending on how you look at it.

Lads, well done (or not, as applicable) on your A-levels. If you are going for officer, remember the figures given are averages, so long as you've got the minimum grades your results play no further part in the selection process, it's all about YOU. So if you've got worse results than anticipated, don't worry about it. Crack on boys, if you've got the heart then you'll make it, be it Marine or rupert.
