basic training
Ive read the booklet and seen the video on hms raleigh but is basic training that hard. is the fitness aspect as intense as that of the army or raf. also is the discipline on the same level as the army and raf. what else can I expect. I know that theres a lot of washing and ironing but do you have to scrub floors and all sh**y stuff like that. I dont mind but i jus dont know what to expect. also like the raf basic training do you have a disco thing where everybody jus has a great laff before passing out. also do you go home after passing out and before trade training.
I left basic, about 5 years ago now, and long back on it as one of the most enjoyable times of my career. Ok yes the trainings hard, but your make great friend there you will support you through it. Alot of the basic life has gone, i.e corrective training and motivation runs. Of course your gonna have the bull shit, thats part of joining any disiplined service. Your get your time of to go to the bar, so long as all your kits up to scratch, and yes one night a week theres a bop, so as long as your not going on AT or got an inspection in the morning, you'll be up there, shaking daddies little money maker, or trying to nail some wren. Theres usallly some leave prior to the passing out parade, and you usally go ashore to one of the local discos in your final week to have a blow-out. Its not all good fun, ok your be washing, ironing and scrubing out half the time, but its all to get you to think like a sailor, I mean we dont have contract cleaners on grey warships of death, everybodies gotta pull their weight.
You mean you want me to to polish the flat again Chief, or no make and mend.....oh man.

IF you try the run and fail you will get remedial PT and another go at it, if you keep failing then they will train you and may even back class you until you pass, they wont let you leave raleigh without passing the tests.
But the time spent worrying about you could be outside doing it and then you may pass. The run is a few laps of a tarmaced tennis court, no hills no kit to carry no rifle to fire at the end. It really isnt anything to worry about.
My biggest challenge was staying awake during lectures as they are boring as f**k.
Good luck

I am currently training for the RM and Iv learned that you want to get below the time stated for the tests, you need to stand out from the crowd, so instead of just making the time that is stated train well before hand and get maybe 2-3 minutes below the minimum time stated, my advice is to go for a 3 mile run 3 times a week then the next week go 4 mile run twice a week then 5 mile run once a week, that should get you into good shape to do a little 1.5 mile run
Raleigh was fun don't know about now
Then it was all Cig breaks round the back of the RAS Rig
But don't think what you do in Raleigh is what you do in the rest of the Fleet / Shore Establishments
Try hard & give it your best shot
