Religion is simply b****x
I believe in God but the funny thing is some of my best and reliable friends are atheists!
I have been reading a bit about the Zoroastrian religion lately.
It’s the first of the monolithic faiths founded by Zarathushtra Spitama (Zoraster) 3,500 years ago that believes in one God, Ahura Mazda (Lord of Wisdom).
The principal theme for the followers of Zarathushtra is to adhere to the Zarathushti creed of Humata, Hukhta and Havarastra (Good Thoughts, Good Words and Good Deeds).

I always liked that one, it was great in 2001 A Space Odyssey.Marina wrote:I believe in God but the funny thing is some of my best and reliable friends are atheists!

Yes to me organised religion to me is utter B*****ks. I am a very moral man but my life is based more on philosophy than religion. I believe acting a good moral life is more important than following a particular creed. I was brought up a Christian; but through life I was drawn to science. Unlike many scientific atheists I take an almost judicial view than the unproven should not be dismissed out of hand. Quantum physics works in mysterious ways we work with unknown stuff, but take it for granted because that’s the best theory at the time. We don’t truly understand something but use it because it works; not in the way that Newtonian scientists worked. We have faith in the theories because they work, not because they are proven. Weird stuff is thrown up the interaction between brain cells can happen at the sub-atomic level; an at this level weird stuff happens imaginary numbers and alternate realities and dimensions abound. Is this the soul, who bloody knows? The scriptures of various religions are a good read because they are tales about leading a good decent life but everyone should take away something different from them. Discarding that which does not apply to them, shellfish and pork goes off in a warm environment don’t eat it, common sense; but then who had a bloody fridge to keep it fresh. Organised religion to me is people using common sense and “dogma” for their own gain. To lead a good life you must work hard to be a moral (situational) person who upholds the values of integrity, courage and justice. It is better to lead a good life than repent on your deathbed!

Yes well to me, atheistic science is complete bollocks. There are many sceintists of equal caliber to you my friend who are Christian and see it in a much different light.
Your views won't be taken down as marks in history, you'll die a pittiable man, much like Voltaire.
I've already said this coversation could have a more civillized tone, but since no one wants to play ball, why the f**k should i care eh??

Not trying to open another can of worms here, but, does being a christian mean you'll go down in history then? people get famous for their actions, not for the religion they followed.Redhand wrote:Yes well to me, atheistic science is complete bollocks. P.S more people go down in history for having their OWN views, not just agreeing with millions of others. You won't go down in history for being a sheep, either. Sorry to offend anyone religious, i strongly believe that people should be free to think what they want, but the guy who was talking about science was just putting his views accross, and redhand just went on the offence and got in there being abusive because the guy wasn't christian. Redhand, you're acting like a cross between a jehova's witness and Hitler.

I was'nt going to weigh in on this subject,
but I cannot resist.
I am a Christian,A gentle one,no fire and brimstone for me.
My Church(Southern Methodist)has members from all over the spectrum
of human beings. We get along real well, and I think that's the point.
We get Along.
I don't care what color you are, where you come from or what
you are/have been.
I probably need to shut up now
Wholley.

gradnojob,
Yes you are right, I meant monotheistic
.
My thinking part of brain does not function very well at that time
Why don't we all get together and hold hands and sing Lennon's 'Imagine' or the Blind Boys of Alabama's 'Spirit in the Dark', they can apease the spirtual side inyou as well as the agnostic in you, now we can all be happy !

Let's all get together and sing "the roof, the roof, the roof is on fire....we don't need no water let the mother f***er burn...burn motherf***er, BURN....." heh heh. This thread is getting a bit worrying now so I think I'll exit..

Nice post and I promise not to revile you for drawing back into the Forum. I won't be staying too long. Your post was interesting because if you replaced 'Quantum Physics' with 'God' the following part of your post applies equally. It works in 'mysterious ways'. 'We accept it because it's the best theory at the time'. Really? ? So I guess you'll accept that the smallest possible particle is of Planck Length. [which is a millimeter divided by a hundred thousand billion billion billion]. It would be simple enough to prove this - if we could build a particle accelerator something larger than the solar system - I guess in the present financial climate no government is likely to sanction the building of such a machine

So does this theory work because it's been proven? Of course not. It doesn't even work and can never be proved to work. But (some of) the public accept it because our all-knowing scientists say so.
So now we have the new priests - they're called scientists. And, actually, it begs the question why we blindly believe much of what they pump out. We're now into the (quantum) realms where we'll never be able to prove anything other than with volumes of incomprehensible mathematical formulae only a handful of people on the planet could understand - and who constantly argue over it.
You say we should work hard to be 'moral' people. But from where do you derive your morals? The Romany people are accused of stealing but this is because they believe no one has the right to sole ownership of property - all property belongs to everyone so they're not stealing it , they're just borrowing it for a while. When the Pilgrim Fathers sailed from Plymouth Barbican and landed in North America they wanted to buy land from the native Americans. They sold the land to the 'white men' because they had no idea what owning land meant. Their duty was to protect and preserve the land for everyone - it belonged to no-one.
So are/were their morales right or are ours? If you're struggling to look for somewhere to develop some sense of moral duty you could do worse than read the New Testament.
And, hey, if anyone wants to ask about the authorship of the NT I'll bite for one more time.

May you and......"YOUR GOD" go with you.
My God is a jolly old bugger who likes a pint and a good laugh. Nobody else knows him, but I do. And I don't really care if what I have written offends anybody.
If you hit your thumb with a hammer you don't shout out "Oooo you still to be proven to exist anthromorphic figment of mans imagination! do you?
Have no time for the general view of God. each to his own say I. But the Swear Words work for me! (Never try to fit a bedroom door on a Sunday!
