what type of iron?
What type of iron do i have to take with me to Raleigh? Seems a stupid question but i am not sure what is a good iron and what is not.

As long as it has a spray feature, a cotton setting (heavy steam), and can take tap water anything will do. I'd go with Morphy Richards. Ask which model will be the most durable as its certain to get dropped. Ask which model is less likely to get gummed up using spray starch. What do your Mum's friends recommend? Seriously.
