Need Advice
Hi im 18 and want to do p company selection.
Ive only just started getting fit, and are underweight on the bmi...........
anyway i dont now where to start, i talked to soldier in the local job centre,
i asked him about the parachute regiment because thats what interested me. he said "Why do you want to be a para?" i said because i like the sound of it blah blah blah.
He said "You dont want to be a para...its full of scousers and cockneys!"
So what the hell do i do next?.....i still want to be a para, and dont care wot this idiot says.

Hey Bryan,
Don't worry about what that guy said, if it's something you want to do, then do it. Who was the soldier? Was it a careers advisor at an AFCO or someplace else? If it was not an AFCO, I would advise you skip him and go find one, I found that they were most helpful at the London AFCO where I applied for the RM. My Careers Advisor tried to persuade me to join the Navy as an artificer, due to a high recruit test result, however once I confirmed that the RM was the pasth for me, he didn't mention the Navy again and was most helpful in every respect. My PRMC is now on June 21st.
So I advise, you find an AFCO and deal with them directly, and then set yourself an attainable fitness training program and go from there.

Get yourself on the Inisght Course. I found it really good and will give you alot of first hand info about the Parachute Regiment. Also visit the websites...
http://www.parachute-regiment.com
http://pathfinders.suddenlaunch.com
http://www.army.mod.uk/para
And there are plenty other sites around. There are ALOT of people who will try and put you off the Paras. And trust me, people in the careers office will try and put you off BIG TIME, and if not put you off, at least try and perswade you to get a trade before you dop P-Company. If you are determined enough you will get passed them, and they will sort you out for the Parachute Regiment. Good Luck, and maybe see you there one day.

Already booked a weekens at the insight coures...i think its in june or july....i already have good qualifications....why do they put you off?

I think simply because you dont really need the qualifications to be in the Parachute Regiment, or alot of people see it that way. Other reasons may be because of their bad press from events such as Bloody Sunday in Northern Ireland. Overall they are a tough and brutal force, and some peoples views are that they are uncontrollable madmen. Then again, there is always the fact that the Paras are more of an 'elite' within the british army, so some people get annoyed with that been the face compared with their regiment. There are ALOT of reasons why people dont like the Paras.
Still, they never have a shortage of recruits, and you never see them advertising on TV or Radio for recruits, unlike the Royal Marines
Everyone had there own opinion really.
In the eyes of the Careers Office thou, they will try encourage you away from the paras, mainly because you would be capable of getting a 'trade' job first, along with better pay. That was the case with me, but I made it clear that I was going to be a Para no matter what.
