Special Flying Award

Post by squeezer »

HI!

I have just discovered this site and have spent the last 2 hours reading about everything to do with the Royal Navy - it is so good ! :D BUT I can't find anything to do with the Special Flying Award :( Im doing the aptitude tests in July and am hoping to to get the Award and go on to be officer Aircrew, I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about what they do to you at the selection in Cranwell ... and what you have to do to get them to give you the award !

Thanks for any advice ! :P

I'm by no means an expert on this, but am exceptionally bored, and have done a little bit of digging for you.

You can find an explanation of the process after BRNC for Officer Aircrew in the FAA right here on the RN website:

As far as the Special Flying Award goes, I have no idea.

Call up and ask them. :) Use a pseudo-name if you want. I'm sure they'd be helpful.

If not, google for it - http://www.google.co.uk

Oh, and welcome to MF.

Thanks - might try that! It would be good if anyone who has been done the tests for the award could tell me what they are about - anyone ??!

flying award

Post by tn201 »

Hello,

I can't bring too much to this to be honest but i can give some educated speculation. I suspect its some kind of scholarship for potential pilots in the RN. I was given a two year sixth form scholarship back in my school days which was targeted at Warfare officers and engineers, this flying award is for pilots as there is a bit of a problem recruiting the right type of people to fly. The scholarship gives you a bit of cash and a reserved place for BRNC, i suspect this award gives the same plus some flying training before you join. All potential aircrew for the RAF, Army and RN go to Cranwell for potential aircrew aptitude tests. They are a series of tests designed to find out if you have the right mental characteristics to be handle to handle aircraft. They are split into different sections and cover pilot, weapons systems officer (observer), fighter control, air traffic, etc. They involve co-ordination tests, mental agility, digital recall, bearings, bit of maths, verbal reasoning etc etc. The point is you either have it or you dont. I failed all of the aptitudes except for pilot which is a bit odd but just goes to show how specific the requirements are, my maths is crap so i cant be a fighter controller, but other areas im good at so i can be a pilot. The process is cut throat, you can't really prepare but you should definitely have a go. If you pass this phase i suspect you will go to the AIB as i did, if you pass well you will be considered for an award. You will need to pass well to be considered, the government doesnt just throw money at any old monkey ;-) You will also have to do a very thorough medical, very thorough..... I'm not trying to put you off, but a very small number of people who apply are actually suitable to be pilots. If you are up for it, go for it.

medical

Post by tn201 »

The medical is lengthy. You do the standard officer entry medical eg. blood, urine, weight and height plus extra parts for aviation. There is a long questionnaire asking if you have ever had diseases and conditions of all kinds. Common problems are asthma, visual problems (short sight), hearing. Due to the rigours put on the body during flight ops there are very exacting requirements for aviators. They will also measure your body, arm length, butt to knee cap etc. to see if you can reach the cockpit controls and fit in the seats and cockpit. As long as youre not a 7ft ape with huge arms this is not often a problem. They will also put you in a chamber which simulates sudden loss of pressure in an aircraft, they give you a couple of exercises to do under reduced oxygen levels to see how you respond. The medical is really nothing to worry about, and there is nothing you can really do about it if you're not right physically. As long as you have a pretty clean medical history, have normal body dimensions and excellent eyesight you are likely to be ok. You should concentrate your thoughts on the things you can prepare for like the interviews and leadership stuff, current and naval affairs. You can get the medical requirements from your AFCO. Get an eyetest before you go much further even if you dont where glasses, i'd personally rather know that i cant fly cos of eyesight before i go through and pass the AIB with flying colours. I've seen grown men cry with the dissapointment.
