In the 60s and 70s our Corps had yearly sports competitions,fencing,running,judo,basketball,volleyball and drinking.I have many good memories of the sgts mess at Doorn.Do these competitions still take place?.They were fierce meetings.

Veloman, i'm not sure if ALL these competitions are still being held, but i do believe some of these are still taking place.

The drinking competition is not yearly anymore. Because of it's great succes, there is a drinking competition every week. I've heard the english, scots and welsh do not participate with the D-competition anymore, because they realized they couldn't win anymore

Ow Question...i'm sure it sounds pretty stupid, but, sometimes you read things about Frogmen, sometimes about Leap Frogs...(in english that is) but, what is the correct word for it? Is it, a Leap Frog, or a Frogman?

Jens, Frogman is the old fashioned word for a diver, as in SBS Frogman. Leap Frog is a game played by children and Royal Navy PTIs (physical training instructors), where one bends over resting hands on knees and the others vault or jump over. In the RAF there is always one who will run into you and make a big fuss, but I think they have been allowed in the Dutch forces for many years. We still find it difficult to live with them!

Jens,the life-forms El Prez refers to are known by the limpness of their wrists,and the way they swing their hips.The high pitched giggle that they give out when a MAN approaches is another give-away.These things are called a number of names by members of HMRM,ergo,Brown-hatter,Queer,Shirtlifter,Pork sword swallower,Poofter,and many more.We do not ,in general,like to live with them,and any found in barracks are usually dealt with in an unkindly manner,they do not stay long.

How unkind of you ABI,to suggest that a Marine could be queer.I once met a Para in Port Said,who was not only queer,but a Moslem to boot,the latter item probably accounted for his prediliction for small boys.

Para Reg maintain links with most European Airborne units, the strongest in my opinion is with the German Fallschrimjager (not PC to call them that BWTF). The 82nd, the Rangers and the old Canadian Airborne Regiment are also pretty close. The French are a waste of rations, but thats nothing new.

Got my kraut para wings on an exchange visit, which reminds me of a story which goes some way to explain our different sense of humour. When we flew back the jerries who had lived in our barracks thought it very funny to super glue the bin to the floor and the pull cord on the sink light to the light itself.

Imagine their laughter when they got home to find everyone of their lockers had a turd in the draw.

I have to say that i met a dutch matelot once, (ok perhaps on a few occasions) he had a broken leg and only one clog. Nice boy, often wondered what happened to him But i do remember for breakfast them feeding us Wrens with tapioca pudding and jam- seen of or what!!! but they were all nice boys .But they were also quite gullable i remember selling my cap tallies for 15 quid a shout.YES LADS JUST MY CAP TALLIES

Also had a great time in Texel and Van Ghent, albeit very briefly.

Enjoyed 100 and 1000 banjo's for brekkie and visiting a very dodgy cinema in Rotterdam which showed artistic films, one of which was in 3d!!!!!

Wish I had a camera to phot the lads as Jon Holmes or whoever blasted off!
