Hi Mick,

I was in the REME until '92 where I served as an Armourer.
Good luck in your future career and in the forum.

Hello GoreD
I`ve actually been in the army for the best part of ten years
Started of as an Armourer myself (apprentiice and then a posting to 3RHA at Topcliffe) and wish I had stayed with that trade aswell.
Just spent four years in Northern Ireland great place/job would love to go back.

Mal,

It's hard for me to comment now as I've been out 12 years. Mick would be the best person to speak to as he is still in. There are alot of changes since I left. When I joined we were still using the SLR and LMG !

Hi Mal

I was an Armourer for my first 5 years.
I spent 2 years at Princess Marina college apprentice training at arborfield, you can`t do this anymore, which covered basic skills in machine work, welding, blacksmithing, alot of benchfitting(metal filing), and weapons training. Some of my best memories of the army are from that place.

I then went to SEME at Bordon for a brief spell to finish of on some of the heavier weapons the army has to offer before I was posted to 3 RHA in topcliffe. Which after an exciting time in south armagh soon became very boring for me, as the unit was not particulary interested in small arms, with them being artillery and all. Got drunk one night and decided to became a tech as I fancied the extra money and the quicker promotion.

The only bloke off my course that i`ve met again and had a good talk to, got sent to the para`s and has spent his whole service time moving between the battalions and the workshop(I think thats shut now). He absolutely loves it, and was considering applying for the pathfinders.

My belief is that Armourer is the best trade in REME and I wish i`d stuck out one posting which I didn`t really fancy as being a tech is not all it is cracked up to be.
