Australian Commandos

Post by yuri »

Take a look at this job description of the aussie commandos

http://www.defencejobs.gov.au/careers_e ... my514.html

what do u all think? (I'm not asking who is better, bootnecks or aussie commandos.)

I am australian so i'm thinking maybe to be an aussie commando rather than a bootneck, so i would apprecitate ur opinions on this job. It does pay rather well compared to british marines ($80 000) a year, which goes a long way in australia although it wouldn't go far in Britain.

cheers

80,000.00 AUD Australia Dollars = 32,615.48 GBP United Kingdom Pounds

Blimey, I wish was Australian. I was going to emigrate there when I'm 40 anyway. 8)

I think you do need a trade or have a allot of capital behind you... I’ve got family out there and was also planning to retire there once I’m old...

Am I right in thinking that you can transfer from a British military unit to an aussie one???

I am not sure either but i think it would be quite handy if it were possible. If this is true once you've completed your 22 years for example would you then have to move back to the UK?

To get into Commonwealth countries like New Zealand, Australia and Canada there is a points system. It depends on the skills and experience that you/you and your significant other could bring to the country. They change the points regularly, putting them up as well as down. You can get information off the net or contact the countries embassy for further info 8)

I have just read the article on Australlian Commandos. I wish I could say I agree that British Commandos are better but I cant.

Firstly OZ Commandos are Special Forces, they get SF Pay hence the reason why you would earn so much compared to brit commandos. Secondly OZ Commandos go through 3 years of training before they become operational, brit commandos do 8months. Thirdly during there 3 year training an OZ Commando has to complete Army Entry, SF Entry & Commando Entry phys & evaluation tests. Finally OZ commandos are trainined in many aspects of special forces areas to special forces standards, top recruits are given the opportunity to apply straight for service in the OZ SAS if they prove themselves worthy, brit commandos have to wait at least 2-3 years.

As a regular force I dont think you will find a finer unit than the RM, but OZ Commandos are special forces so I think its fair to say that this makes them better than ours, even if they are Army Pongos!

To the lad who started the thread if I was in your position I would give the OZ Commandos a shot, but dont forget you are applying for Direct entry into Special Forces and so you are probably looking at a low pass rate (lower than RM Commandos). If you fail then consider regular force service and who better to serve with than RM Commandos.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

As long as i get fit enough then it would be no problem to get in. The system as you stated is made up of many different steps with the first step simply being basic army training. I read somewhere that the aussie government are desperate for recruits to the special forces so i think as i say if i'm fit it shouldn't be difficult. I'm 17 just now so i would have plenty of time to get fit enough by 19 which is the minimum age.

LOL i didn't ask who is better, aussie commandos or british commandos, as The Recruit said aussie commandos are a special force who partake in unconventional warfare and the brits are regular so therefore they can't be compared. Also the aussie commandos specialise in counter terrorism unlike the royal marines. All aussie commandos specialise in close quater combat which is like what the SAS do. They even have their own 'killing house' and use all the same equipment. However i agree that the RM are the best regular unit in the world, but as far as special forces go the aussie commandos will be on-top of the game.

Your almost right there, only in exceptional cases can you apply straight from commados (4RAR) to the SASR. Everyone else has to serve 2-3 years first.

So if there's three years of training for the Aussie's to become SF, then technically, by the time a RM completes training and then serves with a unit, he then has the oppertunity to apply for SAS/SBS. So they are pretty much the same in required time before they can join the SF.

Cheers
