A bit off topic here but a guy at work has a bad back and hes says he went to this place where they passed a currebt through his body and it made him feel better. looking at him now though its done him no good. anyone ever heard of this treatment because I haven't.
I get the impression it was doing by some guy in black leather hotpants wearing a gimp mask poking him with a cattle prod.
stuck in a rut, unsure about the future, unsure about the military lifestyle, for a while anyway

RobT - when you filled out the application forms and stuff did they ask for your family doctor's details and did they mention whether they ask for medical records from them? Also, what was your hearing test like? I had some ear problems when I was younger (including a couple of operations) and I'm trying to get as much info as I can before I apply...

Well in my case i had just moved to the area and haden't registered with a local doctor. He did ask for my doctor back near my parents house so i had to give that. He didnt take the details with him, he just wrote it oon my form and then that went into the records, which then i think if there was any serious problems the doctor suspected then he would of got in contact with your doc. All he got from me was "doctor Jobling, stockwell surgery" and that was it.

Hearing test was pretty simple. I was tested by the biggest head-shed in the coy and he was already pretty deaf as they came! but i had to turn my back to him when he fiddled round with knobs and pressed buttons ( ) and i put my hand up when i heard somthing.

Pretty easy.

Max i had terrible ears when i was young. Operations were common on my ears i had grometts inplanted and after that they monitored me for years untill finaly i was hearing fine. you'll have no prob's.

Cheers Rob, that's pretty reassuring. My problem is that I do have a slight hearing loss in my left ear though I don't need to wear a hearing aid or anything (and not just out of stubborness!!) which is why I'm slightly apprehensive about the whole thing.

I have emailed and written to my local TA offices and a couple of other places but have not had any reply so I was at a bit of a loss as to what to expect.

Guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and see what happens...

Btw - how is the rest of your recruitment going? are you now part of the regiment or do you have to do other stuff before you're in?

8)

Your ears shouldent be much of a problem at all. E-mail and writing doesnt work when it comes to the TA for some reason. The army has a great recruitment process and they e-mail you back the next day but i have noticed that TA places dont seem to bother.

My advice would be to go down and meet them in the flesh. What i did was get the number for the local unit from the armed forces careers office and then just gave them a ring. The bloke i chatted to made sure i knew what unit they were and what they did. He then told me where to go and to head down on a tuesday night as this was a usual "recruitment night" Well it was just a average drill night and i eventualy got pointed to the recruitment office, got handed over a fair few forms.

I got them filled out within a week and get 2 passport photos for id card. The following week the doctor was in so i had a medical (which in the end was nothing to worry about considering how worried i was at the begining of this thread!) the week after i was sword in (swore to protect the queen and her peers, the usual!) Measured up for kit and all that.

As far as i know i'm in the recruitment NCO said next week (tonight now) when you come "you can fall in with all the rest of the rabble" So as far as i know i'm in.

The recruitment bloke will make it clear but you have phase1 and phase 2 training (usualy 2 weeks) phase1 is 7/8 weekends. I'm about to start phase 1.

Good luck anyway. I hope what i've been typing is handy!

P.S what are you looking at doing? RE's? infantry? etc?

Yes - what you are typing is very handy! :D

I was pretty much coming to the same conclusion as you that writing/emailing the TA doesn't seem to work. I guess the best thing to do is just go down there. My nearest unit is a field hospital unit and there never seems to be anyone there but I'm looking to join an infantry unit if possible and the nearest one is quite a few miles away.

As a result I'm probably going to have to wait until mid next year before joining as work commitments will make it really difficult to get there for drill nights before then (if you ain't gonna do it properly...). I just wanted to find out as much info as possible before I go in. That said I think I'll take an afternoon off and make a trip down to Camberley and ask them straight out...

Cheers for the info - good luck with the phase 1/2 training - let me know how you get on.
