Thinking about joining the army as tank crew after being strongly advised by the AFCO not to join the para's due to my BARB test scores, gcse's etc.
does anyone know the score on this role?
What do they do in non operational roles... ie ive been told they sit around and answer the phone??? any one have any input on this?
any input will be useful
cheers

Tank crew
It depends which Regt you end up in Recce(CVR(T) or Armoured(Challenger 2), the trades you would learn in both are:
driving a car then either a Challenger 2 or CVR(T) and maintaining them
Gunner (firing loading and maintaining the fighting systems(cleaning)
Signals using the radio's
you are then classed as a crewman this could take upto 18 months
if this is not your cup of tea there are jobs like driver's in MT troops storemen and other's but most lads join to be in the Sabre Squadrons
Along with the normal role in either Recce or Armoured you can also be deployed on foot to any of the world hotspots the same as most other units.
It's a good life but there is a lot of sitting around if you are on Challenger 2 as there are not that many places to go on exercise in them anymore,
and you are bugger all use when you get out unless you improve your qualifications while your in.
It depends what you want out of the Army but hammering around in 60 ton monsters making big bangs can be good fun but there is a lot more to it than just that.

Don't fall into a trap of RE para, they are RE who get para trained so you have to become an Engineer first I'm sure there are some on the forum with more knowledge about that area than me. Nothing wrong with the Engineers you get a chance to learn a trade for coming out but be aware the work extremely hard and do some shitty jobs but chances for travel are good and all the ones I met where excellent blokes hard working hard drinking types.
