Ahoy there!
Around the Hereford area there exists a (relatively unknown) rivalry between two groups of military type chaps. One group is disparagingly referred to as "flat 'eads", while the other is known as "walts".
Interestingly, a "flat" can become a "walt", while still retaining his "flat" status and many "walts" have become "flats", but not necessarily fully badged.

The Regiment are "flat 'eads" and 'the Det' are "Walts".
Lots of '22' chaps volunteer for and serve with 'the Det'. Conversely many 'Det' people have subsequently passed 'selection' for '22'. Also 'Det' personnel are sometimes 'badged' to do specific admin roles and wear the 'beige and blue', but have not passed 'selection' and would not usually serve in a 'Sabre'.

I thought 22 were clamping down to stop people who had not passed their selection from wearing the belt and beret. I know that they did with all the support staff sometime ago. And who can blame them?Rogue Chef wrote:Ahoy there!

Rogue,
My understanding was that 22 were giving the Det armed back up and help with selection. As the Det was not too happy with them joining the Det for not being grey enough in the grey man area.
Well thats what it said in the Sun, check with Sisyphus he will have read it and cut it out for his folder.

Chunky:
Traditionally 22 have served with 'the troop' alongside 'the Det' as part of 'the group'. Their tasking, however, would normally be seperate from the 'the Det' and was often referred to as 'BFI' (brute force and ignorance) by Det personnel.
Many 22 however served with distinction after attending and passing 'the Det' course.
Joe:
Ranks who served two or more tours with 'the Det' were sometimes 'badged' to fulfil certain roles within 'the Det' set up.
To my knowledge this did not apply to support staff (drivers, chefs, clerks, techs etc).
I could be wrong.
