GURKHAS

Not much coverage of Johnny Gurkha, but they are operating around Basra. I am sure, as always, they are doing an outstanding job.

You're right Andy, the Ghurkas just get on with it in their own quiet way even though the rest of the Army treats them like shit instead of the excellent soldiers they are!!
That said Perce seem to be doing ok out there.

From what I see on tv all our forces are all doing an outstanding job, and perhaps showing up our allies in some respects.

I wasn't aware the Gurkhas had been sent, what formation are they with?

I knew 2 Para had a Coy of Para trained Gurkhas for a while but they were disbanded last year.

I think 1 Royal Irish have a company of Ghurkas with them as reinforcement, could be wrong though.

No sooner do I submit the earlier post I stumble across a picture of a Gurkha VCP on the BBC website. Apologies to any tree frogs logging on.

The Ghurkas are with 16 AAB, they are shown in the earlier photos wearing Para Maroon and working alongside the Irish, while wearing their normal beret, (V Dark Green?). They looked up for it, very warry! I'd let them loose at any Rag Head stupid enough to fire at them. Kukri anyone, .............lop! :o
You should talk to somebody who gives a f**k.

There were quite a few of them visible in the 'Show of strength' pictures before the attack.

Ive read all the stories of ghurkas, including the story of how they fought the british to a standstill.

How does the british army class them now?. Infantry?
An elite infantry?. Special forces?.

Do those that have worked wih the ghurkas class them as amongst the best infantry around anywhere in the world?.

And if so why do we recruit so few?. Surely our army / navy is grossly undermanned atm?.

Very loyal, very brave men who are not always treated and recognised the way they should. Except by the people who have worked with them.

We used to shoot against the Gurkha teams in the Singapore Base District Rifle Meetings.

No contest. They always won, and we always came second!

Between shoots they would sit in a circle, cleaning their weapons, while our guys were attacking the beer tent. On 'watch and shoot' serials they would all fire together, as if it was a broadside, (remember those owdun?)

Amazing concentration and focus. The only time it came unstuck is when a section jumped out of a heli in Sarawak/Borneo and fell in. They came under fire, and didn't react immediately because their officer had been hit in the first volley. Wonderful soldiers though, truly professional. Glad they are on our side, no matter how many there are!

ive always had the gurkhas in my head as kind of a special force.because my dad told me once that some gurkhas kill themselves if they dont make it into the gurkha regiment.I also heard that in the falklands war when the argentine soldiers heard that the gurkhas had come over they started to shit themselves.i also think that england doesnt recruit that many gurkhas because they cant be arsed to pay for them.but thats my opinion.anyway i've always had gurkhas in my head as little aggresive people who are extremely good at jungle warfare i was quite surprised to find out they were operating in the desert.but then again it just proves how much i know about the gurkhas and i tell you something its very close to jackshit.
anyway i have a question why do we have a gurkha regiment in england?

When I was in Brunei my name was spat out of a computer to be the SNCO supervisor/umpire or whatever you want to call it on an Annual Personal Weapons test for 2RGR.So off I trotted to the ranges to be briefed that my job was to oversee the whole shoot for fairness, and to dip every magazine between exposures to ensure all the troops had the right amount of ammo left, ie, that they had not tried to cheat by firing off a few more on the easier exposures to gain a false high score.

How embaressed was I to be expected to do this duty, my firing detail consisted of all ranks from Rifleman through to Sergeant Major and a couple of Lieutenants, both of whom had been in the Army 100. Needless to say I did not shame myself by checking these magazines,I only did a few privates at random, and even then I was embaressed. The general level of marksmanship was very high indeed, and some were frankly frightening. I hope all our infantry units can shoot as well as these guys.
