On photographs of naval ratings, some have chevrons on their left arm, either 1, 2 or 3. Can someone explain what these are, as I know they are not the same as stripes in the army.
Cheers.

Navy Chevrons
Thanks for your quick reply, Loz.
My Dad was a 'Bootneck' (1941/47) and managed to get one good conduct stripe after 4 years, but had it taken off him a few months later when he went AWOL in Singapore and and was eventually caught in Hong Kong, how he got to Hong Kong, I'll never know. He was brought back to Singapore and was given 28 days in Changi. When his time was up, his ship had gone, so he became a guard in Changi, guarding the Japanese war criminals until he joined HMS "Venerable".
Cheers,
Ronnie.

Hi Ronnie,
The stripes worn on the left arm of naval ratings, are awarded;one for each four years of good conduct (or undetected crime!) Hence; after four years - one chevron, eight years - two chevrons, twelve years - three chevrons. They are only awarded up to the rate of Petty officer. They are called, good conduct stripes, and many ratings apply them with velcro. This is due to the fact that the awards for good conduct can be removed, by the Captain on a visit to the defaulters table, where one requests punishment for any misdemeanors. The stripes may then be earned once more by further good conduct.

During the Queens silver jubilee inspection of the Corp on Plymouth Hoe Marine Bob Fergerson was decked out in all his finery with his Three Badges on his blues. Bob was being Bob. (avoiding being given a task, we were doing the comms behind the stands) When this young marine ran up to him and said "excuse me Provvie Sgt but what do you want me to do?"
"Nip down to Stonehouse Barracks and tell them we are short of 4 volts laddy"
He did!
Bob was a brilliant bloke. (hope he still is) With a rather dry sense of humour. I think he was made a Queens Cpl but don't quote me on that. Ifen he had been in USMC both his arms would have been covered in good conduct badges!

Wouldn`t dream of it mate. There`s taking the piss, and there`s taking the piss.(over to you harry) I'm preparing to dig in for all the comments?.
Said it before, there are only ten three-badgers in the Corps, today.
Who will they look to, for the voice of experience?
