Taken from the webBut a career in drama was problematic. Prince Edward had signed on with the Royal Marines who were sponsoring him through university on condition he served with them for five years afterwards.
He dutifully entered the Royal Marines after university but resigned his commission three years later. In total, he served less than four months

Reports said the Duke of Edinburgh, Captain General of the Marines, was displeased. Prince Edward said later that his father had not put undue pressure on him to change his mind.

Military Service
On leaving Cambridge, Edward joined the Marines to train as an officer, an effort to meet the very traditional expectations of his rather straight-laced father. This proved to be a mistake. The Royal Marines are one of the most demanding military units in the world. The Royal Marines turned out to be more than Edward could handle and he soon left the Marines.

I took the above from the web and he did sign up to sponsorship through Cambridge which I do find amusing as he is not short of a bob or two.

It says he did 3 years but that was mainly all spent at Uni. It states he did 4 months all told.

That is not the required time to complete the Green lid part of OTW.

As for all 3 princes having Green lids, I think not. Charles is a Para wannerbee and did a para course but not P Coy and is something like their colonel in chef

I have never seen a picture of him with Green beret or every heard it mentioned

Andrew did not do OTW but did do the Cdo tests like Jim a fix it. Somebody obviously fixed it for Andrew.

Having and earning are worlds apart.DofE has one,Mountbatten had one,King Hakon(Hon Colonel R.M.)has one.I'm sure the list can be added to.I can only vouch for Andrews right to wear his. There were many Royal Marines,of all ranks ,who repeatedly failed their BFT.Did they have the right to walk away from their failures still wearing their green berets?Or have I missed the point of the "coveted green beret"?

Sorry if my posting above seems out of context, I only read the first page which nominated famous marines. I didn't realise it had moved on to a more specific subject. Whatever your views, Hannah certainly did her bit.

To get back on thread. I've just spent 3.5 hours with Harold 'Podge' Overbury, former First Drill CTCRM. What an exceptional man. I've so many stories for the dits book; Podge stands out as one of the Corps all time characters.
You should talk to somebody who gives a f**k.

Val

Thats the whole point and jist of my thread, earned and not issued, yeh like D of E earned one and likewise with Mountbatten who was a great man.

You said 3 Princes, D of E and Mountbatten etc are not Princes thas why A C and E came to mind.

The fact that guys with earned berets let themselves get unfit is another issue

I enjoyed this thread a while back and have found out some more names such as the writers Tom Sharpe, John Fowles, John Gardner, Evelyn Waugh, Compton McKenzie and the gambler, conservationist and all round good egg John Aspinal:

Hey Sully

Just read that link.

Am I being particularly thick today, but how could HRH Prince Edward serve from 1983 to 1987 and never get past Lympstone? He very nearly qualified for a pension! :o

My thoughts exactly Rotary - though I would say he didn't even qualify for a bag ration for his first exercise  (I do have a bit of sympathy for what, I think, Dave Barrett described as a brave decision on his part - leaving CTC was unthinkable, I'd rather do the whole thing twice than go home and say I couldn't hack it)

I liked the blurb about Harry Corbett - people like that make the Corps what it is. I always enjoyed his laconic manner on Steptoe & Son, which he no doubt perfected in the Corps. We all knew people like that.

I wonder if you young blokes are aware that GORDON HURST,who played many years with Charlton Athletic, was a RM stationed at Sandwich in Kent, and was known as DANTE. You see, Dante won the Epsom Derby in 1945 and it was considered that if Gordon had four legs, he could have won.

Podge always did stick out.... Grand fella.

AND - I remember well middleearth, that all fast runners were nicknamed
Dante - Even in the North East the cry was 'Howay Dante'

Charlton ? We always used to say that Pete Riley (Sigs)was a good Marine,
apart from his supporting Charlton that is ....

Pete Riley, another famous marine, I was with him on Rear Link 2 ( which for you benighted non-sigs is a radio team and not anything to do with the rear nether regions) in 42, great guy, good sigs, where are you now Peter?
