Any nutritionists out there

Post by qcnr »

I have commited myself to a triathlon with a difference that is held in a
local Fjord.

It consists of
25K paddle (kayak)
Climb europes longest continuous flight of steps 4444
10K walk/ yomp
30K cycle back "down"

What should I take with me in the form of food/ drink. It is estimated to take +/- 12hrs
Every meal a banquet, every paypacket a fortune...

Im not a qualified nutritionist but am a qualified personal trainer and doing a sports science degree.
My reccomendation is that you need to take plenty of carb sources. Examples include jaffa cakes, bananas, chocolate, lucozade, energy bars etc to keep your carb stores topped up. Fluids should ideally contain electrolytes (minerals like sodium and potassium) drinks like lucozade will contain these but look for some specialist sports drinks that youll find in gyms or shops like holland and barret. alternatively look on the internet.
Although you might automatically think water is essential its probably better to get your fluids through sports drinks.
Youll need to spend some time experimenting with various foods to see what your stomach can handle, some foods may not digest easily for you and make exercise uncomfortable or even difficult.
Thats probably the best foods to use. Its a bloody long time to be exercising so youre going to need to get carbohydrates consistently along with fluids otherwise you wont finish.

Top tip
Avoid food items that are very high in sugar as you blood glucose will spike and then plummet, which will make you feel weak.

Take a few high sugar items just in case you do feel like that.
But the bulk of your enrgy shoul dcome from "complex" carbohydrates. These are found in things like oats, flapjacks, cereal etc. Make sure you are used to training with these.

Consume plenty of fluids. I suggest a sports drink that contains a maltodextrin (a glucose polymer) rather than normal glucose. Train with this so you r stomach will know how to deal with it. If you react badly, you could dilute it with water, or drink a combination of the two.

As a frequent consumer of high-sugar foods, I am considerably worried.

Can this affect my health?

Is it wise to have such a high-sugar intake?

Thanks

Not a good idea to consume large quantities of sugar. This insulin deposits excess sugar as fat. This will wear out the pancreatic beta cells which produce insulin, and can lead to type II diabetes. Time to cut down on those extra sugars in tea and coffee

Well i'm sure it wont be the end of the world. Couldn't tell you exactly what the recommended intake is. The more active are the more you are protected against the effects anyway. I'm partial to the odd bar myself.

it is prolonged intake over a number of years that causes a problem.

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life.Is this true?

A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it....Don't waste them on exercise.Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer. That would be like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster.Want to live longer? TAKE A NAP.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiences. What does a cow eat? Hay and Corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system.Need grain?
Eat chicken.Beef is also a good source of field grass(green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your daily recommended daily allowance of vegetable slop.

Q: Is beer or wine bad for me?

A: Look,it goes to the earlier point about fruits and vegetables. As we all
know, scientists divide everything in the world into three catagories:
Animal,Mineral, and Vegetable. We all know that beer and wine are not animal, and they are not on the periodic table of elements,so that only leaves one thing, right? My advice: Have a hamburger :laola: and a beer and enjoy your liquid vegetables.

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one.If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?

A: Can't think of a single one,sorry.My philosophy is: NO PAIN....GOOD!!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?

A: You're not listening.Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil.In fact, they're permeated in it.How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: What's the secret to healthy eating?

A: Thicker gravy.

Q: Will sit ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?

A: Definately not! When you exercise a muscle,it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?

A Are you nuts? Hello....Cocoa beans.....Another vegetable!!!"It's the best feel good food around!"

Well I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets. Have a biscuit...flour is a veggie! One more thing,"When life hands you lemons, ask for a bottle of tequila and salt.

as a medic just do what we did every weekend before a deployment, we consumed vast amounts of alcohol, especially Guiness, this is rich in Carbs, Iron and is also a fluid. It also improves eyesight, proof of this is the linear improvement of good looking girls dancing next to me the more alcohol I consumed. It seemed the more I drank the more appealing they got and the more confident I became..........chat up lines I would have never dreamed of sober seemed to roll of the tongue and at the end of the night there always seemed to be one girl all on her own waiting for me smelling of kebabs.
Unfortunately most of these girls seemed to get mugged and increase in weight after I'd fallen asleep, does anyone else know of this phenomenon??
So if it works at weekends with women why not try it before during and after endurance events????
Anyone with any experience of this type of pre-event carb loading please share your experiences!
Theres also another scary event I heard of, the Smirnoff Ice Alien abduction syndrome, it seems that after consuming vast amounts of Smirnoff, U wake up next morning in a location unknown to yourself, with a headache from probable head scanning by alien devices, memory loss, soiled trousers from first seeing these aliens, and flashbacks of the previous evenings events that can occur upto 7 days later. The cure of this is to consume more alcohol, and attempt recontact with these aliens to sort them out like!!!!! I've been trying this technique now for some 12 years but so far, though I've been abducted most weekends I have yet to make concious contact with these beings.
there is a help group at wwwww.IdidWhatLastNight!!!!!.cccom
Hope it helps
