hi,
i hear that when you are doing a section attack, marines get down on their chest and shoot, then crawl a few feet, maybe shoot again then get up and run like f@#k TOWARDS the enemy who will be laying off round after round in your direction, is this madness or just "hell with them, we get new recruits every month". i read this in Bravo To Zero aswell about when they are trained to run towards the enemy, asif i would 0X
If you are attacking, that is the general idea, you run towards the enemy, it is difficult to attack and take ground running the opposite way. Read `The Real Bravo Two Zero' and it becomes pretty clear that the patrol did very little attacking at all and the body count was in their imaginations. `McNab', has subsequently proved by his quite reasonable fiction stories that he had that talent for fiction, likewise `Ryan' and others.
I don't denigrate the Hereford boys in general, I even spent a while in 23 after leaving the corps, but Bravo two Zero appears to have been led by a cowboy and was well below the accepted Regiment standard.
As far as I know the generl procedure is to mov forward if in a deliberate assault, or to fall back to allow he group to reorgansie for a counter attack.
And regarding B20, the real Bravo two ero shouldn't in my opinioon e cppletely trusted; the bloke doing it mentioned ow he only got in after a whil;e of askign the government. And we all know ow caera shy iraqis are, it's almost certain they were put in a situation where they said what the government told them to, or else have a fatal accident. The question is just a matter of how much of their script is true, and only the members of B20 and those they directly reported to will know that. That said, while the real B20 version does seem an aful lot more plausable than McNabs and cos effortsthe fact that it as so easy to contest the facts does act as a warning to treat all special forces stories wth a bloody bg mountain of salt, at least until the officialgovernment recrds are released (if ever). One other thing to note though; not long ago the BBC did a documentary on B20 focussing on the allegations that the patrol was abandoned for political reasons. Not entirely relevant in itself, but at the end it did say that one of the patrol members (from NZ) had written a book about the affair which also contested McNab and Ryan, but that it was never published (and the lack of new information suggests it still hasn't).
VS,
Geoff had referred specifically to section attacks, no mention of ambushes or the like. If he had then yes falling back MIGHT be the thing to do but generally going forward, charging the guns will rattle the opposition (as well as yourself) instead of them calmly conducting a duck shoot.
Better still join a mob that don't get that close to the cracks and bangs.
Your oppo provides covering fire. Marines job is to slot the enemy before they slot you.
Proper cannon fodder are the units with lower standards or even worse the french foreign legion - they've just been dumped and left to fight on in the past!

the key is to run towards the enemy, unless you want to get shot in the back. never run from the enemy, you will only die tired. who is easier to shoot? a marine running towards you screaming bloody murder firing semi accurate fire in and around you position or an army soldier running away with his weapon lying on the ground screaming like a biotch.[/img]
