Press-ups again (sorry guys)

Post by dan »

Can anyone clear up once and for all the way a press-up is done??

From what the PRMC guide says, I believe it is arms shoulder width apart (note the guys elbows are NOT by his side) and then down so the arms are at 90 degrees, about a fists height off the floor and then up again.

I've heard loads about keeping the elbows (and hence upper arm) tucked in by your side which makes it more difficult. if this is rubbish, how is a Marine press-up any different to a civvie press-up?? Shed some light Ro55, me old mucker before you depart for CTC!!!

Oh, and Wilson, got my adidas a3s today as you suggested, great pair of shoes! Incidentally, have you ever thought about entering the sales arena? Recruit instructors are going to see a vast and unexplainable surge in recruits wearing a3s because of you

I practiced them elbows in, but down CTC they let them count at 90 degrees.

So you had your elbows tucked in by your side during training? Like close to your stomach (along the line of your torso)?

But the instructors there let candidates have them away from their side? The PRMC guide shows the guy doing press-ups with his elbows quite clearly not along side his body but out. If you get what I mean :)

Cheers. Thank God I got that sorted!
Only 4 days until you're in! To be fair, joining in early January is going to make it nice and difficult. Think about how hard it is to get up early in the morning, then remember how much worse it is when the temperature is icy cold! :D Slippery assault course doesn't sound all that fun either! Seriously, wish you all the best mate. Don't let the cold get to you and go for it!

everyone has been saying that your arms needed to be tucked in as you go up and down while doing press ups, so this is a lie?? :agrue:

i used to be able to do 60+ doing them the "civvie" way and going all the way down, and not with arms tucked in.

then i heard that your arms needed to be tucked in and i could bearly do 15. but now im up to 35 with arms tucked in.

press ups are a real bastard

they take the longest to get good at, and you lose "press up fitness" very quickly so you have to keep doing them to stay good at them and even more to improve

Im beginning to hate press ups....Im doing mine like the pictures. If I get told im doing it wrong, i'll tell them to drag Taffy Jay away from his weapons training and come to the gym to explain himself

From the PRMC fitness guide and what Ro55 has said, I think it is safe to assume you can do the press-ups with your arms away from the body. If you could do 60 'civvie' ones and 35 'tucked' ones then I don't think you'll have a problem anyway on the PRMC.

Best to play it safe, i'm gonna continue to practice them with arms tucked in.

How longs it gonna take you to get down there on Monday Ro55? Damn i wish i was in your shoes, i wouldn't no what to do with myself, knowing that this time next week i'd proberbly be in the barracks doing kit admin and looking falward to the beasting that the PTI promised us the next morning... .
I'll say it again, good luck Ro55, and enjoy.

My running has been suspended for a few days as well. Walking back from the gym yesterday I nearly flipped myself onto my neck about 6 times!
