Specialisations Questions

Post by faddius »

This is from the official publications regarding specialisations:

'Once you have passed your training, there are 25 specialisations for you to choose from, all offering a wide variety of qualifications. Whichever one you choose, your primary role will always be as a Royal Marines Commando.

Most newly trained recruits join the General Duties specialisation but you can volunteer for any of the other 24. We are currently actively recruiting for Driver, Signals, Heavy Weapons Anti-Tank, Heavy Weapons Mortar and Vehicle Mechanic through the Direct Specialisation Scheme (DSS).

The specialisations are: Aircrewman, Armourer, Assault Engineers, Chef, Clerk, Drill Leaders, Driver, Electronic Warfare, Heavy Weapons Anti-tank, Heavy Weapons Air Defence, Heavy Weapons Mortars, Illustrator, Landing Craft, General Duties, Royal Marines Medical Assistant, Metalsmith, Military Provost, Mountain Leader, Physical Training Instructor, Platoon Weapons Instructor, Stores Accountant, Signals, Swimmer Canoeist, Telecommunication Technician or Vehicle Mechanic.'

Apparently one is able to volunteer for any 24 but I thought that you had to be a JNCO to be a ML as it is primarily an instructor branch therefore ineligible as a 'newbie' and to serve SC you have to have served for 3(?) years. So there are only 22 other specialisations that one can apply for for newly trained recruits...

I was suprised to read, or maybe not read in this case, nowt to do with Computers, not in the slightest..
Does a modern troop of Marines not take a Laptop with them when they go into Combat? Wos all this Digital Battlefield I keep hearing about or is a carrier Pigeon still the norm?

The clerk role has a fair bit of pc stuff, inc programming etc.

Computer use is taught to everyone who wants it I think.
No IT specialists as far as I know.

Laminated porn is a CTC essential. Makes it water-proof and wipe clean.

I wouldn't fancy being a clerk but I always thought Laptops were used in the field, ya know, transmit troop & enemy positions to command..

Maybe I've watched too many films....

Porn is good though

Maybe seen too many recruitment ads, always see them with their wee GPS and palmtops asking for a resupply of water/food/porn.

Like everything else with those ad's its very rare, where are the windsurfing jobs in the army?!?

Saw a "careers in RM" booklet last night that had IT stuff in it.
Doubt the AFCO have a copy as that would make far too much sense.

Sadly I didn't Prof it as my mates going full time soon so I think he might have instead.

Lots more little niche's than I knew of.

Signals is best for joining the digital battlefield

However its always overdone in films/ ads :(

Its like the quote from "the art of war" (wesley snipes film)

"We shop at the same store its just you have a higher credit limit"
Every meal a banquet, every paypacket a fortune...

If you want to be fussy telecomms techie course probably get even more to play with. And they get choice of 4 additional skills

- Recce leader (not ML)
-Para
-Language training
-Combat intelligence.

I copied that from G&L so it must be right.
