Would I still be able to join?

Post by Eagle6 »

I'm planning to join the army and try out for the Parachute Regiment. But I only have one problem that worries me. I have Tinnitus in my ears. "ringing in the ears". I did a few tests at the doctors to see what condition my ears where in and they are above normal hearing even though I always got that ring. But since I have damaged my ears, I have to wear ear plugs in loud areas. Since I have to use earplugs would this affect me in Para trainning? also, I use a herbal pill that helps to keep the ring away. Well the ring doesn't go away but its very very quiet. I can only hear it when I sleep. Am I aloud to take Herbal pills in the army or is that a no no?
Thanx

I've got Tinnitus in both ears at 35 decibels (loud man, I said it's loud), which has now moved on to the next stage, balance disorder, due to continued nerve damage. If it gets really bad the third stage is epilepsy. Tinnitus has made people top themselves, if they cannot cope with the persistent noise, reduction in ability to enjoy normal conversation and loss of sleep etc
I'd suggest a long careful thought session. You'll damage yourself permanently with exposure to live firing, and hercules engines. IF they accepted you with this existing condition, they would never pay up if you made a claim for damages.
Doesn't sound good does it, all puns accepted. 8)

Hey, Thanx for the reply.
I was just wondering.. did you just go to an ear doctor to see how loud your Tinitus was? Also, how did your tinnitus move on to the next stage? Where you just exposed to loud noise?

are you not allowed to use ear plugs in the army? :)

Eagle,

There should be no problem with you taking a herbal pill. it is your own business.

To pass an Army medical, you will have a hearing test. Noises of varying pitches played in both ears. You will need to pass this.

You will also be asked to fill out a med form. How much you put on this, if anything is up to you. For exmple my family have a history of diabetes, had I put that I would have been rejected. Migraines also are a no no. I would say that if you mention this problem, the same may happen. However it is your hearing we are discussing, and as rob says you will be exposed to a lot of noise.

Think carefully.
