I am currently training for my PRMC course in Feb for the RMR.

I heard that the pass rate is quite low.

Can anyone offer any advice about not being one of those who don't make the grade? What are the most common reasons for being failed?

If I complete the suggested fitness schedule before going to the course, should I be in a good position to pass physically?

Many thanks.

Sean.

Hello Sean. I haven't applied for PRMC yet, but I will be soon. You can find what the 3 days for PRMC have in store for you on the http://www.royal-navy.mod.uk site. I'm training to the standard so that I can max the POC tests (i'm not applying for an officer place though!). When I go I intend to be able to do 20+ pullups and 100+ pushups and situps and at the moment I can run 3 miles in 21 mins. Haven't started bergen work yet though, going to start it soon though. I plan to be prepared

From what I have heard they look for people who don't give up and have a good positive attitude. Hope i've been some help. Good luck with your PRMC!!

i came back off the prmc 2 days ago. i got pulled off the course coz i injured my ankle pretty badly but it was good in a way coz i got to see the last fitness test from the instructors point of view. the guys that passed were the ones that sprinted when they were told to sprint. they don't look at how tired you get, they look at how much effort you put in. in one exercise you're required to sprint along a beam. most people ran fast.. only a few ran as fast as they could...

Cheers;
Mat.

Hard luck Mat. You going to try for it again?
So, what you're saying is that it isn't necessarily the people the fittest people that get in, it's the ones who try their best and do exactly what the instructors say?
What was the fitness standard of the guys that got through in regard to the tests?
1 more Q . What was the pass rate like?

You should try bombing off the board into the water, now that would show courage!!
Thanks.

Thanks everyone... especially Steve and Mat,

I really appreciate it.

I assume (from what you guys have told me) that we do not 'pace' ourselves during the course. It sounds like you have to give it 200% effort the whole time. Is this true? Would they rather see you go balls-out from the start and struggle at the end (still giving 200% effort)? Rather than pacing yourself for maximum at the end?

Many thanks, again,

Sean.

I think what Matt is getting at is that, if they say sprint you do exactly what they say and SPRINT! If they tell you to do something and you only do it half-assed, they'll probably get the idea that you're not doing what you're told because you dont really want to be there. I guess, when they tell you to do as many pushups as you can in a minute, you do exactly what they say, even if you can't do anymore at 40 seconds you keep trying, giving 100% until they say stop, even if you don't even manage to get another pushup out of it, it shows you have guts and determination.

Do be put off by age and size - determination and Grit are what carry you through. Sheer bloody mindedness that you are going to make it and no one is going to stop you kind of attitude (we call it determination). If you fall behind in anything don't give in and get in the wagon, keep going even if you have to crawl...

I was 16 and 2 weeks old, 7 Stone 13 Lbs, 5 foot 1 & a Half inches in stocking feet when I joined the Marines . Evan faught Bantam Weight in the Corps boxing finals (came second).

According to my doc's I passed training at 8 and a half Stone but had grown to 5 foot 10 inches that was 16 May 75 having joined as a Junior on 3 Sep 74.

Which meant I had My CGB at 16 Yrs and 9 Months.

I contacted a recruiter last week and i'm gonna go for an interview soon. The recruiter said that alot of people fail on the VO2 max beep test and on the pullups.

Your pullup numbers sound excellent, I can only do 11 dead hang pullups at the moment. Make sure your palms are facing away from your body and you go all the way down to the bottom after each rep to a "dead hang". The recruiter said that the main reason why most people fail the pullup test is that they have been training using chinups (palms facing towards the body), he said people come in that can pump out 20 chinups, but when asked to do pullups in the test struggle to do 2, make sure you're doing the right ones  and if you get up to 20-25, try adding some weight by getting a dumbell and holding it with your feet.

Your other stats look ok too, 2.5 miles in 15 mins is pretty fast. The max for the pushup test is 65 in a minute believe, so try to aim for 80-100, because I doubt we will be nice and fresh-like doing these tests . Good Luck in your training!

LOL Geoff, I hope that 6+ foot thing isn't true, well it won't be in my case i'm only 5ft 7 (8 on a good day! and the only thing that's gonna stop me is the medical !(I'm abit iffy on my eyesight , It's about 20/40 , 6/9 in the new metric measurement, do you have to have 20/20?)

Geoff, being short meant I found most of the gym work easy (easier than the 6 footers nothing was easy)The ropes were a doddle I could zip up them without my feet even in full CEFO (Complete Equipment Fighting Order and SLR) I struggled on the Speed marches unless I was at the front. (had a problem with the pase two of my step t o one of the lanky lads.

The bottom field and the tarzan course were easier if you were shorter but had to really go for it to get over the wall (took me 2 goes sometimes it really used to piss me off) but the monkey bars were so easy with short arms...

I joined 3 Cdo Bde RM out of training and went on a 6 month ship bourne exercise all round the Med where all units were involved (except 45 ("Four-Five") think) I was then Drafted to 41 Commando for two years from Oct 75.

You are eligable for active service from 17 and a half years but can be drafted to an operational unit immediatly on passing training.

i got a multi gym fot x-mas, to get my upperbody strength good, bench press, pull down bar, the leg equipment, pec dec, rowing machine, the full lot. pull up bar in the garage, well its more of a metal bar that goes right across the top of the garage, u cant grip it, you have to bend you fingers across the top, its very hard, but gets your grip strong.

i will have crap qualifacions, not above D's in my GVSE's  i just did my MOCKS and got D's.., im clever i just hate school, the teachers are bad.

so if i dont get in the RM, im screwed basically, its what ive wanted to do since i was 12, no stopping me now!
