Thanks for the reply. Thats what my understanding was (3 years in UK), although my son did get an email from the RAF and was told that he could be considered and was told to send over all his details, including proof of UK citizenship of me and my wife. I dont know if it will help that I am ex RAF, and both my missus and I are also ex TA

I do know of South Africans (didnt have a UK passport) who went to UK and joined up almost right away. One from this town was killed while serving as a Royal Marine.

I want to be a NCO aircrew but I haven’t got the grade in maths I need. So i am applying as movement controller to start with once I'm full trained I'm going to retake my GCSE maths and get the grade needed after that I'm going to apply for weapon system operator. Thats what the AFCO told me I do.

Good idea, go the whole 9 yards. I hope my son will get an invite by the RAF and then go from there. If he isnt accepted for aircrew. he can always go for ground crew such as engine or airframe fitter. Good career prospects after he does his time.

That is true. Also when I leave I will have more than one trade to fall back on to.

I got an interview on Wednesday for movement controller.

I met a South African who's in the Army over here - he can't go home because he's apparently now considered a mercenary and he'll be arrested as soon as he steps off the 'plane.

I heard about that, but in reality I don't reckon it will happen. I know of 3 or 4 fella's personally who are working for a VIP protection company in Iraq, who are also considered mercenaries, but none have so far been arrested when they go home. The only thing they could do to my son (if he is able to join the RAF) is pull his resident permit, no big loss.

Things are changing here now, a lot has happened politically within the past few weeks, the governing party the ANC are losing support big time, many are going over to a new party called Congress of the people. Violence has already started, and its going to get very interesting during the run up to te elections next year.
