Glad the old sweat has backed me up, would have been a tad embarrassing if it turned out to be the Pay Corps or something.
So 9 is 45, 20 is logs, 16 is 59, anymore for anymore
45 9
log regt 20
59 16
40?
42 8
HQ&Squigs?
539?
29?
Davo ask the MTO if he has a list, dont do it infront of the lads mind, you will get talked about

Farking crabs!
Not a perimeter fence or china tea service with doillies in sight ffs!
No worries Davo, I'm sure 59 is 16 (or 24 whatever they are calling themselves these days.)
When I was their Doc and returned to Log Regt, they had remoulded my lid to the Andy Cap style, when I walked into med Sqn lines my new SSM (tony Boyle) went a tad red when he saw me, odd lid, para smock down to my knees, hair long with huge sidies and a pair of ksbs with hose tops............still we got on once mountain biking cropped up

Stever
Each commando unit has a tac number on vehicles and they dont relate as such to the unit number ie 42 Commando is designated 8.
Fark knows why or how, but each unit has its own tac number unrelated to its named number.
I dont know the history of the system so would be chuffed if someone could answer and explain.

Quite an interesting blog, slagging off Westminster, and with some pictures of RAF Regt vehicles in sandy places, but not a tac sign in sight:
