  WoW whats with this 'Jungle Warfare Specialist Qualification' do you get one with a 24hr rat pack?or do you qualify after sitting in some ambush position for days on end.
Please do not underestimate those who have gone before, there are those amongst us who spent a whole commission in jungle warfare conditions.

A Troop of Bootnecks were out in the Ulu in Malaya when this young just out of the box lad got bit by a snake. The snake knowing full well what would happen if the rest of the Troop got hold of him having read DRO's SPPPPPPPIIIIIZZZZED of into the bushes sharpish.

Anyway the young lad stood up and started screaming...."I've been bit by a snake! I've been bit by a snake!"

The wise old Troop Sgt came up to him and sayeth "Calm down lad or the blood will rush to your head and you'll die" Yon lad looks at the wise old Troop Sgt and sayeth "I've been bit by a snake! I've been bit by a......SMACK! the wise old Troop Sgt smacks him so hard on the jaw that the lad is out like a light.

A few minutes later the lad woke up and started to scream "I've been bit by a snake! I've been bit by a snake!" The Wise old Troop Sgt came up to him again and sayeth these wise words "Stop screaming and getting flushed or the blood will rush to your head and you'll die so you will lad!"

The young Bootneck looks at this doyen of wisdom and sayeth...."I've been bit by a snake! I've been bit by a.........SMACK! Once more the wise old Troop Sgt knocks him out.

They get him to the LZ where a Wessex M5 is waiting to whisk him away to Changi Hospital, the wise old troop Sgt is there next to him, the lad wakes up again......."I've been bit by a snak.........SMACK! The wise old Troop Sgt once again knocks him out saying "The blood will rush to your head and you will be dead son"

Anyway the lad is flown to Changi Hospital. Two days later the report arrives on his condition at the Company Office. "Mne ***** was casevaced to Changi hospital were he was found to have a non venomous snake bite and a badly broken jaw......" :D

I loved my time in the jungle from Belize '85 through JWI Course and Curry Trails to Ex Ocean Wave '97).

Most medical/health problems were caused by mossies, ants, the heat, rashes (from the heat and sand), leeches, hornets and deadfall. There was also the occasional scorpion sting and centipede bite.

Many snakes and spiders were encountered but no bites were reported except by the MTO (40 Cdo RM 1997) who claimed he was bitten as he walked in his flip flops through the short grass outside the mess at night (never confirmed), and when I (Sittang camp Ex Curry Trail 1990) picked up a newly dead mangrove snake and suffered slightly when some of the venom seeped onto my hand!

There was an unfortunate Marine from B Coy who had the distinction of being stung by the same scorpion twice; first on the hand, second on the back of the neck, both stings occured within two seconds!

Thanks Rover, I truly learned something from that, not least that Claret also has another meaning.

Before my time though, so I suppose I am only a youngster. :D

Rouge,

Upstairs in my room I have a Globe and Laural from 1990, which has an article from 40 Commando's Ex Curry Trail. Here are the pictures from the article and the front cover:

Enjoy!

Dave,
That was the excercise. The mangrove snake is mentioned in the article, I think.
It was during that deployment that I took part in Muay Thai whilst on R&R. There are some pics in my Personal Gallery.
The front cover is Cpl Greg 'Charlie' Chambers.
