A clip never hurt me when I was growing up (not more than it was meant to, anyway).

Next on the agenda - ban parents from giving their children food they don't like. It's tantamount to abuse, I tell thee.

who ever in our pathetic government ruled no smacking of your children,id like to ask them personally if they ever had a god clip round the ear for doing something really bad,or did they live there life like the f.....ng Waltons.ive raised four children on my own and they had a smack(obviously when they needed it) and now they have left home and have a family or their own and do the same to their children and i reasure that not one of my children have been dissrespectful to their elders,whats going on!since this smacking ban how many elderly people have been hit by unruly teenagers.we should introduce National Service at high school age whether they like it or not and maybe some respect will come back to our country.

No way! The last thing the Armed Forces need is to look after the nation's trouble makers. After commiting themselves in two wars they now don't need to sort out the 'bad kids'. Nice idea but its impractical and simply wouldn't work. If they don't want to be there, then they will waste valuble time and they wouldn't get passed- and neither should they if they are not up to strach. They should not be passed just becuase it MIGHT be good for them because they have an ASBO.

Hi Dave point taken and suppose I agree with your statement so how do you suggest that we repremand the kids that will be looking after us when we are too old to look after ourselves....shall we bring back the cane or just keep waisting governments money on trying to rectify these unruly little ........! because these days as ive heard amongst the teenagers where i come from. having an ASBO as a sign of being respected by their fellow friends...as seen on tv a good few soldiers have become of these asbos when sent to lads army and boot camp,they need to learn respect and you certainly do in the forces ......does any one agree or want comment on this matter maybe some dont agree.at the end of the day these kids who dont know respect because they havnt been taught it and just think that they can walk all over us parents are gonna be the rulers of our country one day and god knows what will happen next?

Now this is just another government plot to get more money out of you. They stop you from smacking the kids, the kids then start to get into trouble, then they can fine you for having out of control children.

I understand what you mean. Maybe some sort of compulsory Cadets? Give them a taste of what the Military is like? I think harsher prision sentences are the key but maybe tougher parenting comes into it too, although in some cases I understand that the parenting was fine, it was external influences that affected the child's behaviour.

Not all teengaers are bad. It pisses me off when we all get tarred with the same brush. So I wouldn't worry that an Burberry wearing, ASBO riddled Chave will rule the country because they won't. Becuase the problem kids get all the attention and I mean at school, papers, news, TV etc, everyone thinks THIS generation are out of control.

Well I'm not and I will never be. I've got respect for elders and some manners to go with it. Just because I wear a hoddy or play football in the street, doesn't mean I'm going to mug a Granny or but a brick through your window. I know you wern't having a go at me in particular but hey ho.

I posted this a few months back on another forum I frequent.

To right, I've had this belief for years now. Three years of national service, not necessarily something military based (overseas aid work with a military ethos would work), for anyone who doesn't have anything planned after GCSE - A levels, college or a proper job, or some other worthwhile contribution to society. after A levels/college, a two-year stint in the same kind of situation unless you are university-bound or, again, off to a proper job or similar.

So, unless you can prove that you are off to something that will mold your developmental clay into an upstanding citizen, you should be put under the charge of a large man with bristles and a loud voice.
As people have mentioned, the military most probably wouldn't want the kind of person this scheme would be aimed at, and I wouldn't go so far as suggest forced labour, but I think a happy medium between the two could work quite well.

and yes you do understand my way of thinking,and of course i wasnt having a go at you personally,i put the blame totally on the British Government and it's a real shame that some kids out there ar'nt toght respect from an early age,i mean whats happened to the word please and thankyou these days as i work in the retail sector and i'd say only 3 out of 10 children say these words.....

Now having done National Service I was not sorry to see it go and nor where the forces. May I ask if it is the Forces job to do what The Parents, the Schools, The Courts and the Government should have done and that is to give the children a basic grounding in civil responsibilities.
Now becuase some prat had not processed my apprenticeship papers I had go into the Army only a short time before my finial exams for City & Guild Electrical Engineering, bringing that to a grinding end. Now I could have an exception and taken my exams but I then had to sign on to serve a minimum of 11 years. Now I saw many a young man called he was not dealing from a full deck and the suicide rate was quite high. There is all this talk about overstretch in the Army but in those days yo had 10 weeks training a weekend pass and you were sent overseas for the next 21 months. Where did a lot of them wind up, well there was a small war going on in Korea where you fought of millions of chinks, then there was a bloody little conflict in Malaya, Kenya, Palestine, Canal Zone, Cyprus, Suez Invasion to name but a few, and the beauty of it all you did it all on HALF PAY. Now I found that on attack planned every man chosen to hit the enemy wire first was a National Serviceman, as in those days the age of consent was 21 so to find a chap married at the age 19 or with a family was all but unheard off so we where just cheap cannon fodder as their would be no pension to pay out. At the end of your service you handed your kit in and you left with the remains of your last pay packet in your pocket. Even now a lot of people will say to me after all I had seen and done, "well you were not a proper soldier were you"
Now if any of you had have children is this what yo want for them.

Yes, I agree. Not enough is done to sort out the brats and that is isnt't the job of the Armed Forces.

A chef I worked with over the summer told me that the French have now stopped theirs, he was one of the last bunch to go through.
